I think I've come up with a project for myself and I'd love to hear what others might think of it.
I am interested in both RL and SL in vehicles of many types - cars, boats, aircraft, motorcycles, etc. I've decided to begin construction of the Second Life Museum of Transportation.
My goal is to collect an example of every type of vehicle created in SL and place them on display in a museum setting. I hope to interest the creators in getting involved by donating example vehicles, providing information and landmark kiosks to their retail sites, etc. I am planning a tour balloon that will highlight any vehicle-appropriate spots in SL as well as pehaps visiting the retail locations of vehicle producers.
I can foresee that there might be a prim count problem with this but I think I'm going to give it a try. I'm thinking that if I can perhaps get 2 adjacent plots I could straddle the building across the parcels to get more count.
If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd be interested in hearing them.

Merging parcels

I didn't realize you could merge parcels. That would work excellently for my purposes... Thanks for the tip.

It's a nice idea, Cutter, but as you say the prim limit will be a hinderance - were you planning on static displays or a constantly changing set of objects in order to get the best variety out of prim counts? What sort of prim allowance are you looking at, anyway? Just being nosey - any more places where I can pimp^H^H^H^Hdisplay my vehiculature are cool.

If you do this as an outdoor exhibit, like a car show, you can save more prims for vehicles. With a 1024 plot (or two 512 plots together) you can have over 30 vehicles, plus signs, booths, etc. (As long as you don't include Cubey's non-physics planes!).

Quick note, Milo - they're not non-physics There's a neat little bug in the client that allows you to do it, for now... I was just pondering the practicality of rotating displays of vehicles, really - there's a _lot_ more than 30 vehicles out there.

Photo display. Or a set of glass boxes that rez various vehicles inside when you press buttons, like a vendor, only it's like a museum case. You could have a few of these things set up on your land, and people can wander around going "Ooo!"

Museum of Transportation

Good ideas, all, especially for some outside display. I have 8192m2 right now with something like 1800 prims allowed and I just bought another 7000m2 that will probably get sold to raise capital. There is another large plot next to my 8000 that I'd like to acquire. That should give me around 3500 prims to work with.
The museum building will be simple, to keep the count down, as well. I did have in mind displaying as many as possible, but using a Vendor that offers Preview on Demand might also be a good option...

Bosko uses a temp rez of objects for his Vendor
It would work great
Rez it...spin it 360 a few times..kill it saves on prims and works real slick
Have a few selected items on perm display and then others on demand
or have your 30 displays thaqt rez hang around for say 15mins then die and are replaced by the next one in your inv.
an ever changing display....

Yup, ditto - if you're curious take a look at my vehicle vendors at various locations (Oak Grove aircraft section, Cubey's Aerodrome Kaz level, My Tan land, and Gray near the skyhook 210 metres up). That sorta thing was what I was pondering. Although without the sale option, obviously...

I have a pair of (mostly) unscripted vehicles. If you're interested in displaying them, I can provide copies - but they're not for sale (at least until I get around to learning how to fix their problems). IM me in-game if you're interested.
