Making a circle larger than 10m ?

Given that, thanks to LL we can only go to 10m max dims.

(without resorting to megaprims)

If you want to make a base 20mx20x10m then you would simply get four 10x10x10 cubes and put them side by side.

But say you wanted it to be a circle?

Perhaps 11m x 11m in dia, or 12m x 12m etc etc........

Given that circles are not really circles, but have about 15 or 20 (wild guess) straight faces. the only way I can think of making something bigger would mean LOTS of triangles and trying to get them all to fit together, using the prim shaping tools to try and get them not to overlap each other...... Perhaps even using a 10x circle in the centre and having odd shaped bits around the outside to extend it's diameter.

But, I'm thinking......... there may be some special tricks that can be used to create larger diameter circular block as I'm sure I'm not the 1st person who has wanted a circle larger than 10m dia.

Anyone?

Why would you not just use a mega prim?

The other way is to use the freebie Ringmaker tool - available in just about every freebie gadgets/builder tool boxes in SL.

Yes, I'd love to, but unless I'm greatly mistaken you can't edit them in any way otherwise they "pop" back to 10m size, and they only come in a VERY limited amount of "pre" created sizes in the 1st place. So would I get one that's say 11m dia or 12m dia?

Perhaps I'm missing out on a vast selection or megaprims I've not aleady seen yet?

Must admit, I've not seen a "ringmaker" tool, but then again, I've never looked for one either :)

Check SLX (now XStreet SL) for megaprims... a ton of new ones were made recently.

There is magic sphere and ring tool somewhere in SL. I am not inworld so I cant get the name or creator off my copy. I seem to remember that is even a freebie.

Anyone remember the name or where to get it?

Cadroe Murphy has an excellent tool called ShapeGen that will do a lot of the work for you if you cannot use MegaPrims. It will even do some things that you cannot do with megaprims.

You can find it here:

http://xstreetsl.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=223298

At 100 Lindens, every builder should have it in their toolbox.

There is an excellent freebie tool for finding megaprims, called SALT. It's a HUD. You wear it, and chat the dimensions of the megaprim you want. If it finds it, it's delivered to you. If it doesn't, it will give you a list of the closest matches it found.

This gadget saves a TON on megaprim inventory!

By the way, you CAN edit megas, to a certain extent. You can change the type, e.g. from box to cylinder; you can hollow and path cut the prim. You can use the twist and taper and shear tools. What you CAN'T do is tweak the size...you try that, and it snaps back to being 10m in its largest dimension.

thanks for the Salt link lindal, came in handy last night

piggie look for something called shapegen there are a few around, you tell it what size you want, radius, width, amount of prims ect. ect. and it'll rez a number of prims to complete your shape. with several shapes to choose from, such as ring or sphere. i picked one up from a frebie place but i'v also seen them at the main celedon rez area along with a bunch of other great freebies

The other thing you can do is use three or five or more (odd numbers seem to work better) overlapping ellipses to get a close approximation to a circle.

Sounds great. DO you have a link to where I can find this SALT item as I did searches last night and didn't come up with anything.

I don't know about everyone else, but the first place I look for anything is Cross Street, errrr Ex Street, ummm XStreet SL - whatever it's called now.

IM me in world, I have a set that I believe has all cubes from 11x11x11 to 255x255x255. You can turn them into cylinders and use prim torture to change the length.

(should we start calling that "prim extraordinary rendition"?)

Several of the megaprim sets created recently, including my own, included incremental sizes starting at 11m and going up to 100 M, specificly to address situations like you propose where you really need a single-prim solution. Search for "Megaprim" on Xstreet-SL, and there are a bunch of free sets there.

You can also use flattened cylinder sections to very closely aproximate a circular base. Before the new sizes of megaprims existed, I made a 20 M diameter cylindrical tower, using Chosen Few's method for the walls. (see links below). I used 12 flattened cylinders, hollowed to 85% and cut at both ends. Each segment was rotated an additional 30 degrees, and moved into place. I used a building grid texture on some flat prims to lay out the wall sections on the correct positions, and was done with the basics in 15 min or less. The result, on the exterior walls, is a beautiful circle, with no visible seams. It even textured quite well, using 4 repeats per surface horizontally.

An excelent discussion by Chosen Few on this construction trick can be found here:

/8/ea/55336/1.html#post586734

A more detailed, though somewhat argumentative, discussion is here:

/8/bb/53267/1.html#post562061

My own first attempt at a 20 M diameter tower is illustrated in that latter thread.

It take a little playing around. but Use a tube. change the twist end and begin to 90. then adjust the X and Y hole size this will create a squashing effect to the Tube.but as your diameter goes outward the thickness will also decrease. But can be very useful and will not run into mega prims begin rezet back to default. Plus one prim. you can get a 19.5 x 19.5 x 0.5 meter disc with this meth.
