RL$$ For SL Fun?

I'm curious to know how much avg. people are willing to pay for fun in SL. Having recently bought my first property, I was somewhat dismayed by the cost. For owning roughly 2000m2 of land, I am slapped with an additional $15/mo. on top of my subscription. Now, though I have been terribly impressed by this world, $20-some bucks a month seems pretty high to pay if I want to really influence the world! 460 Prims just runs out too quickly for real fun.

This relativity of cost based on owned land makes sense from a "keep the game going" standpoint, and I'm not daunted by paying what I am currently... but I don't get how those people that own large parcels DO it! They must be paying $50 to $100 a month or more! Do these people earn enough Linden$ to offset a large chunk of their RL$ cost?

I admit I am new enough to not yet have a full grasp as to the Linden Economics system, and how it seems heavily smeared into RL$...but I've payed every MMOG out there... anyone have a good explaination of "how the world works", or any experiences of how people balance RL$$ and Linden$?

They're very rich.

Some people spend hundreds of dollars on coin collecting, or comic book collecting, or train building, or other hobbies. SL people do it all virtually.

Er, well Mole, we don't do everything virtually.

Most, but still a few things done no-virt.

:D

I figure I can spend about 80 $ on two meals at a decent restaurant.

You get a nice buzz, some nice food, some nice atmosphere for about an hour.

Now for 40$ you can play SL with a lot of perks for a month. You can even sell the land back to get your purchase price refunded someday if you like.

In $/hours what is the better entertainment deal?

If you get well enough established in SL and start making a decent amount of L$ each month you can sell what you don't need on GOM or IGE and recoup some or all of your tier fees. If you really work hard it's possible to actually make a few RL bucks per month. Given that and the relatively high exchange rate, the tier fees are a bargain.
