Seems as though LL needs to be looking at operating their business in a way that is more similar to web hosting companies where you pay for so much bandwidth and storage (ie server and network resources) and if you go over what you paid for you simply pay more.

This would bring the burden of paying for the needed additional resources to those who are using them and would certainly cause people to start trimming their operations to avoid overloading sims and therefore additional charges.

This would mean that we the sim owners would have to be given some sort of parameters in terms of system resources allowed for a given sim (full or open space) and a means of monitoring what our usage is. If you were using more than the alotted system resources LL could send out a warning message letting you know you are incurring additional charges.

Some means of monitoring what our additional charges are for a given month would also be necessary. It may be that some people would be willing to pay for additional resources at times, like when they want to have a gathering with lots of avs attending.

Perhaps there are technical reasons why this would not work, but it certainly seems to be worth considering.

and, while thinking long range

this might also lead to a way to retain ownership of a sim, but deactivating it until larger demand, better economic times, or some other way to retain the investment... almost like the reserved grid space program.... not fully thought out idea, but better than mass abandonment of sims.
