People on here are saying things like "Well OF COURSE we were going to abuse these cheap sims! How could LL be so stupid to think we would not do that?" And yet you same people now try to claim that you're somehow going to "hurt" LL by suddenly abandoning these Open-Space sims you've been abusing all this time? If you abandon them enmasse you're going to save LL lots of money by not having to buy so many new class 5 servers starting in January, to replace all the class 4's supporting overloaded and abused Open-Space sims. Also if you abandon them you're hardly going to end up hurting LL since class 5 is the standard for all mainland and island sims already. They can take an unprofitable overloaded collection of now abandoned OS sims and reuse the server hardware for several smaller, more evenly loaded and more profitable regular mainland or island sims. LL is most likely going to feel no pain from this at all. But it is nice of them to open up this forum to let the OS abusers to have a place to blow off steam and say just how OUTRAGED they are for LL to step in and finally bring the hammer down on this improper land use and tier abuse. The people complaining the loudest about this are probably the biggest Open Space abusers with the most to potentially lose, since they were the primary policy abusers in the first place. This is like a repeat of the casino people saying how when they leave LL is going to be so devastated and hurt by their loss. LL moved on and the world keeps growing anyway. So it will be when the OS abusers also close up shop. (This is my real SL account, and I'm not posting under a pseudonym because I am not an Open Space abuser and so can post directly here without hiding behind an anonymous alt to hide any potential dirty Open-Space deeds.) .

Scalar, I don't know, there may actually be some abuse going on in terms of massive temp rezzing, regular big events or the like. Personally, I've visited many openspace sims and never seen an example of this. What's plain from Jack's announcement, though, is that LL is arbitrarily redefining what "abuse" of an openspace sim means. The fact is, an openspace sim does offer 3750 prims. That was their idea, not ours. It follows that making use of these prims DOES NOT constitute "abuse", whatever they choose to say now. I'm using slightly less than 2/3 of those prims on the OS I'm renting to create a beautiful landscape that I call my home in SL. Even if I could afford to keep it after Jan. 1, which I'm not, Jack's blog post makes it clear that somewhere down the road LL would take my landlord to task for the "abuse" I'm committing. This is nothing but a big heap of reeking BS.

Scalar, if they allow whining as evidence of underage users then they might be in for a problem if they actually enforce banning all those people. Otherwise I agree. I figure wait a little while and stay away from the forums and the JIRA (and I realize the hypocrisy of actually saying that on the forums) and it will pass except for occasional references in random forum posts and bringing it back up when the next incident happens like what has happened with the vat issue.

Yep.
I continue to feel bad for the people who were using them or were planning on using them for their intended purpose, though.

I have only been to 2 openspace sims that some friends were renting. I was disturbed by the fact that they seemed to think they "owned" the place, and kept referring to it as if it were a real sim. One had parceled up the place for rentals and the lag was horrible. He was so excited about being a "sim owner" I just didn't have the heart to burst his bubble about it. So I remained quiet. The other friend just had a simple residence on his and one of those stargates. He dialed the stargate to activate it and the sim grinded to a near halt. Those 2 events was what changed my mind about renting openspace regions out to others and heed what LL warned about. They definitly were not designed for normal use and I was upset with that estate manager for selling them to my friends like they were simply just 1/4 of a normal sim, which was completely untrue.
