There is a rumor that if you abandon an OpenSpace sim, that you will be banned from SL and will lose all your other holdings too.
I'm pretty sure this is horsecrap, but enough people have mentioned it to make me wonder if there's some truth to it.
One should be able to at the very least abandon a sim if you are no longer able to pay tier. It would be the same as canceling any other service you have. Is there some sort of lease in place that makes sim abandonment verboten?

I never saw anything like that in any tos for sl.
But if you go behave stupidly in the welcome centers or otherwise disrupt secondlife I would expect you to get kicked out for a while unless you keep doing it in which case they might get tired of kicking you and kick you more permanently.

Define 'abandon'.
Are we talking about removing your payment info and refusing to pay your bills?

I believe that if you make arrangements to turn over a sim you are the payer on back to LL. And your account is paid in full you are fine.
Its when you hit abandon and don't make arrangements with LL and have recurring charges you don't pay that you get banned.
Shouldn't happen but I don't trust an automated system. I would make arrangements directly with LL to turn back a sim to them rather than hit a button and pray.

No truth to the Rumour at all

There is Absoluetly NO truth to this rumour. You can buy islands and let them go as much as you want. And if you file a ticket to drop one of your islands you still get a grace period of up to 12 days to decide you made a mistake and want it back. Now if you Drop your last remaining full prim sim, you would no longer be able to own any openspace sims as you have to own at least 1 full prim sim to own any openspace sims. We have bought many islands and also asked LL to close down a few that were not needed. The Concierge support team are wonderful to deal with and very responsive to help with land matters, so if you don't need one of your sims and cannot sell it, just file a support ticket to close it & if you are worried about the date on the tier payment due, just give the Concierge team a quick call and they'll make sure it is noted.

If not now, when? If not us, who?
Thousands of SL residents will suffer under this new LL ruling on Openspace sims. If you are one of them, or know one of them, and they are moral, support them. Write a message to every Linden you can find on search, and IM them a copy of it; put the message in a notecard and drop it in all of their profiles; post the message to this forum, with additional comments; post your message ini Jira; open LL trouble tickets and post your message; find blogs about SL and post your message there again and again.
Define the message and repeat it to all who will listen and to all who will not.
It worked for Gandhi.
Give it a shot.

Thank you for the responses. I'll forward this post to the folks that spread the rumor to me, to set them straight.
