Open-space - how to host on own server?

I too would love to host my sims on either my own server or a rented server space...
Is that possible?
I have no idea of how to go about this.
If somebody could explain it to me, I would be most grateful...
Since LL can't/won't carry the consequences of their own commitment, this could perhaps be an alternative?

What LL is proposing here is in direct conflict with Danish law (I'm a Danish citizen), even if the TOS allows for it - wonder if that has some merit?
If LL really carries this through, the existing open-spaces must be grandfathered!

The 50$ raise means that I would have to raise the weekly tier from 1995 L$ for 937 prims to 3045 L$ for 937 prims, for the 4 inhabitants of each of my 2 open-space!

I'm a Danish citizen and am 'blessed' with the highest VAT in the world - 25% - which Linden Lab dutifully invoice on top of all purchases and maintenance fees… That is why my weekly tiers have to be of that order, if the sims have to barely pay for themselves.

That is of course ridiculous and impossible, so I too shall have no choice but to abandon the sims - I doubt anybody will buy them, as there will be an absolute glut of open-spaces on the market in (at least) the first quarter of 2009.

As it has been a labour of love, not primarily a business project, it is a dream that is shattered too.
I'm inclined to abandon my primary sim too and find some other solution.

I also really like to host my own sim even if there is a small cost for maintenance.
(I can understand being in the grid and using bandwidth on asset server is not free)

For the moment I don't think it's possible on the SL grid.

Impossible for you to host your own server, and have it connect to the SL Grid.

There are alpha-test level projects like OpenSim and OpenLife that are attempting to set up seperate grids and/or stand-alone servers that can be accessed with a modified version of the SL client, but those servers and grids can NOT be connected to the SL grid at all. In all of those that I am aware of, some features, like terraforming and basic scripting, generally work, but a lot of critical features like a functioning monetary system, functional grid-wide asset servers, and the ability to do avatar attachments are either not there, or not fully functional yet. So comparing them to SL now is like comparing a half-built log cabin in the wilderness in the Old West to a comfortable apartment in a modern city.

Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

Linden Labs is based in the USA. Therefore, it is not obliged to obide by Danish legislations.

What has occured to me just recently even if the OpenSIM grids are not connected to the SL grid quite yet as in transfer of avatar and all its assets via TP it is possible to connect these worlds up via word of mouth, blogs and advertising. In addition transfer of content you have full permissions over is already possible via 3rd party tools available on SLX.

iIf i can further clarify how simple it can be the way the HIPPO opensim client works is on the log in page you can choose which grid to log into including SL so its possible for anyone not requiring the market power of SL to exist in both worlds and use OpenSIM grids to create, build etc and still maintain a prescence within SL to be able to tap into the larger population via good communication on how easy it can be for somone to simply log out of SL and log in on another grid to check out your work.

As for those who simply want a spacious piece of virtual land to create a homespace a place to play and chat with friends then believe me OpenSIM is already an option for this at a far far lower cost you just need to drag those people who are important to you across and you can set up right away and have all you need.

I have only dipped my toes into OpenSIM as of yesterday but already im seeing that as long you dont rely on any kind of large economic dynamics for your activities in the metaverse then OpenSIM is a far cheaper option for many who use SL as recreation.

Im yet to try this but after further investigation myself over the last 24 hours OpenLife seems to be the prime candidate as an alternative to SL.

Thank you Hern - mmm useful info! Has given me food for thought and 3 interresting links to explore:

I shall be looking around!
They may still have a long way to go; but Rome was not build in one day - eh?
