Apart from the general dumbing down of the Input & Camera options in Preferences, does anyone know whether it's still possible to un-select mini-map rotation, or has that feature been dropped?

It's still a radio button on the first ("General" tab of Preferences (CTRL-P).

In 1.23, the option was moved to Advanced->UI->Rotate Mini-Map

They're making it "harder", i.e., advanced, to not rotate the mini-map?
Sheesh.
Won't bother me, but I feel sorry for the noobs.
Next they'll be rotating the big map and the scripting editor. rolleyes:

All of this settings stuff will be completely different in a few months anyway, if LL lets 80/20 do its job.

Does anyone know if Linden Labs does actual usability tests? Even before a beta release, all the bright ideas of the engineers need to be tested by people who use SL viewers while observed by LL personnel. If LL really did such a thing, the note making about the reactions to hiding the mini-map rotation control should have flagged to their technology chief that there was a problem. Same for the pie menu and the reordering of layers on the face. All good ideas in theory--armchair style--but totally boggling when a real person bumps into them when they are put into practice.

Thanks guys - FWIW, my guess is that LL is simplifying where they can, on the assumption that fewer noobs will want to learn to create or tweak their systems. My guess is that the focus in SL will move increasingly towards social networking, although I have no evidence for that - it's just a gut feeling. Already, I know plenty of people who don't know that Advanced Options exists, or don't care. Frankly, the more SL gets dumbed down, the less interesting it becomes for me.
