.
Today for the first time I have been experiencing hard SL crashes that require a manual shut-down of my PC and having to run chk disk to repair resulting hard drive errors. This happened to me 3 times today.

The scenario is:

1) SL screen goes all white and gives the (Not Responding) message.

2) I am not able to shut down SL even with the use of some heavy-duty application-killer programs.

3) The only way to shut down SL is by turning off my PC with the power button -- windows shut-down and restart do not respond.

4) When I start my PC again I discover I now have errors in the indexes on my hard drive requiring me to run chk disc to repair.

This happened to me 3 times today.

I have been using RCs for months and never have experienced this before.

A friend who I was with today who is also using the RC had the same problem.

Vista 64x
Intel Quad Core
8 gigs ddr2
Nvidia 9800GT

I'll second this - I'm running an AMD 64 dual core, but on 32-bit Windows XP, so I'm not getting the total whiteout condition as cited in the previous post. When I downloaded the latest RC, my frame rate dropped to 0.5 frames per second where it had been approximately 24 frames per second just prior to downloading the newest version with no other changes. Flushing the cache did not help. The standard release version of the client I'd been using (the latest one) still runs fine and was unaffected.

When the RC runs, it starts hitting the disk HARD, and only rebooting stops it. The extremely high disk I/O is probably what's killing my frame rate, so I'm guessing it's trying to allocate huge amounts of virtual memory.

I have been having the exact same problem, Hok. You are not the only one and i still have no solution to it. :-(

Honestly, it sounds like either your hard drive is going bad, or you have a virus. The Client may be causing the issue to manifest, but it's highly doubtful it is the cause.

Maybe checking the core temp would be useful.
