I recently installed the new viewer and WOW does it lag, I sart to walk and look like I am crashing then am halfway across a sim, or it takes me 15 min to walk around a SIM that should take only 5 min. Why dont you guys make sure these bugs are worked out, I wish I had the previous viewer to reload, cause at least with that one I cna maneuver and fight.

My FPS dropped by about 1/2 when using the 1.23 level viewers
06-16-2009 21:02
I noticed it when I last upgraded release candidate, so I went back to the regular viewer.
Then I made the mistake of installing the latest version of the released viewer, and am seeing the same thing. I tried going to the latest version of release candidate, but no change.. Are other people seeing serious performance degradation in the 1.23 level viewers compared to the 1.22 ones? |

Past few weeks, there have been some sim problems that sound like this. It's possible that it's not the viewer lagging you at all.

Building problems too...
06-17-2009 19:06
Updated to the new viewer today and had problems building right away.... seems everything is so super sensitive now when moving prims around.... delicate alignment seems so much harder, and with almost no mouse action I took away an entire build and had to drag it out and realign everything..... not too happy...

Past few weeks, there have been some sim problems that sound like this. It's possible that it's not the viewer lagging you at all. Oh it is the viewer,.. Im online almost 24/7 and I noticed it right away after installing the new viewer and I heard it from other people too. Playing a bit around in preferences and tweaking the grapic settings made it acceptable but it's still a bit laggy. _____________________

Using Second Life 1.22.11
06-19-2009 00:40
Oh it is the viewer,.. Im online almost 24/7 and I noticed it right away after installing the new viewer lag is just as bad on the old viewer also this the wizards of the lab having their fingers in the network or the servers again. This is what happens when you introduce chimpanzee DNA into the coder pool )) |

I'm using the old viewer again and my fps is around 16 which is decent for me. With the new viewer in the same area and same settings just 5 minutes before I got about 6 fps.
I do like some things about the new viewer though esppecially that its in my language now. Not that my english is really terrible but my Dutch is better. Also Linden water (with the same settings) looks different / better. _____________________

Are other people seeing serious performance degradation in the 1.23 level viewers compared to the 1.22 ones? YES!!! the 1.22 runs well (other than group chat and some IMs not showing up till a relog) the 1.23 is unusable. Not only does it lag horribly, not only are there many invisible avatars all over (you can tell cause their prims show the AV dont), not only is it next to impossible to chat even in local chat.... I have to completely redo all my preference settings everytime I run the 1.23 (I know there is a fix for it but im sick and tired of LL and the volume of irrelevant info I have to read to just find a lil fix.) Yes I am seeing the same issue many of us are on the 1.23 and for me the 1.22 still works (other than it lacks the code to be a verified adult) |

Performance wise the new viewer works fine for me. And I build for a living in sl and haven't really noticed any differences. I just don't care for some of the features that changed, like the pie menu and way things look when you edit.
I am on the greenlife emerald viewer now and I like the features, but it seems slower to me and the UI sounds echo. Might switch back to the sl viewer. Vladi |

one thing that I have noticed is that the latest lines of viewers, when you enable basic shaders, it is the same as enabling atmospheric shaders in the previous versions. Adding the atmospheric shaders to the basic shaders is really causing performance issues for me. Granted I dont have a very powerful computer, but I do meet the minimum requirements, seems that SL is trying to get people buy computers to keep up. Can we get the basic shaders back to being basic shaders without the added atmospheric shaders added in??

New viewer help!
08-04-2009 11:40
I'm reading here about the new viewer upgrade not working so well, and I agree. The new one is just frustrating.... things rezz very slowly, lots of lag, and I crash everytime I edit an object that has light (have submitted a ticket for this). I'm also reading here how some folks went back to the previous version -- I'm wondering if someone might be kind enough to tell me how to go about switching back.

lag issues
09-15-2009 22:14
my suggestions.....it all works fine...except for "lag spikes or lag waves" thats SL
upgrade your hardware.... run compatible/recommended or higher end graphic cards use DDR3 RAM I have run both Intel and AMD architecture....AMD is much better throw Vista in the rubbish, (if you have to run Vista, disable Aero)use XP Pro Full OEM with embedded SP2 although Greenlife Emerald takes longer to initially execute works better then standard viewer or Snowglobe Upgrade to the Greenlife Emerald optimised pack ( I build all the time and find the latest Emerald fantastic) and yes...I have trialed standard and snowglobe and 3 other third party viewers. My fav system: AMD 5000mhz twin CPU industrial grade mainboard, quad array of ASUS 1024mb PCI Express graphic cards, hotwired and bridged, 8X 1024mb DDR3 RAM OS: XP pro OEM with SP2 embedded all updates except SP3 SL viewer: Greenlife Emerald optimised pack with advanced graphics (in prefs) tweaked currently trialing a pre release version of WIN7, will keep you all posted with my results happy SL'in Abraxxas Twine |

laglag lag..part of SL
09-15-2009 22:24
oh yeah.....clear your cache every few days,
keep up general maintenance on your OS such as defrags clean dust out of your computer case regularly unclip RAM modules (dont touch contacts with bare skin uses a NEW pencil erasor to clean RAM contact points) oh and the AMD 5000 I run, I use a liquid cooling system, no fans to deal with wearing out, if you must run fans, use ballbearing ones...make use of the extra case fan mounting points (run as many fans as you can, with at least one running backwards to draw the warm air out of the case, up the top at back cos hot air rises)and its worth the expense to run HDD cooling fans...if your hardware is running at its best, software will run much more efficiently too my point being software will only run as well as the hardware that "drives it" |

just thinking about the lag
09-17-2009 16:55
Is there anyway to make all the textures be saved in a temp file on peoples drives?
Maybe a temp folder setting that lets you fill it up to a point so you don't go over the max you have set up for the files. So we don't have to load over and over the temp files will stay for days or months so you don't have to reload the same spots over and over that may save banwidth so the servers can hold more people.... I would of told someone who could do something about it but its to hard to find the right person to talk to. I hope this can help the game. |

Abraxxas Twine - it shouldn't really matter what software/hardware people have as long as it is fairly recent. the problem is the same problem we've had for the past two and a half years - The boffins at Linden Labs keep on adding new layers of paint in order to hide the massive cracks in the foundations of the game. Plus they don't even stop to consider that not everyone can afford to be updating every two months in order to use the "new" gadget Linden Labs have added - even though that new gadget doesn't work properly. Look i understand part of the reason they have to update is to get around bugs hackers introduce but it has to make you wonder - if hackers are able to crack Linden's codes so easily, how good are the people at Linden labs really? Maybe LL should be hiring these hackers to fix SL instead of the idiots currently working there.

Is there anyway to make all the textures be saved in a temp file on peoples drives? /QUOTE] It's called the cache, Joe, and textures *do* get stored there temporarily. Unfortunately the cache size and how it saves stuff is not very good. Max of 1GB, only 80% of which is used. That may have been reasonable back in 2002 when SL was designed, but nowadays most people have enough hard drive space to store a lot more. The software developers have talked about fixing it, but they have not yet. |

To lots on here this is more then just a game.....too much to ask to have better hardware or better managed hardware (or both) running the servers and in turn powering up the grid??? I seem to vaguely remember way back now when LL promised a cpu for every region instead of the case now where you reg see cpu server power being "shared" Lets see LL rightfully claim the title of best virtual world simulator and in turn deserve such a title!!!! happy SL'in to all... ![]() |

I have two problems with the current viewer for VISTA 32bit:
1) lag as mentioned 2) mute only blocks dialog but does nothing to grey out excess attachments and their scripts or media. If I mute someone lagging the sim down with prims, gestures or bling, it won't work. I didnt find this in the JIRA. Is it there or should I file it? _____________________
