Can I upload files to SL, or burn to my disc without SL crashing? I am relatively new to Second Life and the "help" Second Life has given me has pretty much exhausted all diagnoses. Surely someone else has had this problem before...I am running Windows Vista & have done nothing to the settings... exactly as downloaded from SL. I can save to inventory or my e-mail, but that is all. Any ideas?

I crash often trying to upload files or saving captures to hard drive.
I'm thinking memory problem.

I've had it with different viewer versions from time to time. If you are using the standard viewer, you might try the release candidate.

There are also several 3rd party viewers you might try. There is one at http://imprudenceviewer.org/

I appreciate your input...I,ve looked at other viewers but the list is long and confusing. Any suggestions on a good replacement? Thanks again!

There are many and most, if not all, are based to varying degrees on the source code distributed by LL for the main viewer. So, it's certainly possible you'd still have your crash on uploads.

The one I liked the best was the Imprudence viewer at...

This problem is directly related to the configureation of your machine

What platform are you useing to play ie processor video card memory the basic system will not run will on anything less than a p4 3.2 ghz with 2gigs of ram and a decent nvidea card that means a 6800 up. What are you running in the background are you using a 3rd party firewall such as zone alarm, it does require specific configureations to work with SL.

I have no idea about vista since I will not use that pos still in XP pro and have very few problems except the massive lag they have piled on all of us.

BTW the generic 5200 5800 and low 6000 series nvid boards perform poorly in this game, I know I run 2 machines with them and they are unplayable ))

Nothing I try has resolved this issue...I know not where to turn. I opened the ports SL suggested, but alas, to no avail. I have tried a release candidate viewer, & two third party viewers...my system is more than enough to handle SL, but it still crashes when I try to upload or download. Can anyone suggest anything? I am restricted as to what I can do on SL! And I have searched Wiki & the Knowledge base thoroughly! Going mad here...

Uploads or downloads that cause the viewer to hang for too long will cause the server to assume you crashed and will disconnect you. This may be unrelated to your problem but you can test this by reducing your screen resolution and see if that will let you start saving snapshots to your hard drive at least. Be sure to not have anti-aliasing turned on as that will slow the process a lot, but if you have all default settings that should not be an issue.

I have tried everything everyone suggested...I still freeze & crash when I punch "upload" anything, or burn to disc...I also tried it in a clean boot state, with absolutely nothing on this processor except Second Life...and I think I'm quite insane now!

Turn off your "firewall" filters and just have your router/firewall do network address translation.

Put the mouse cursor in the Help About Second Life dialog in the section where the system information is shown.

Press Control A. This will highlight the information.

Press Control C. This will copy the information.

In the text box where you are replying here in the forum, press Control V.

(This works on Windows systems.)
