If a man who doesn't even work for Linden Labs can make a Viewer compatable with Vista and Graphic Cards.. Why can't Linden Labs make one themselves... Hmmm the question remains.

I believe, realising that they can't do everything, they released the client as open source for the very reason you describe, also to give those with a talent, to fix bugs. I don't know whether you'd label that as smart, or stupid? I would just say, it was relastic.
