was having a great time in SL. 30 days old and loving it. Invested in paid membership. After much searching bought 1024m mainland land. looking good hillside. Looking forward to landscaping etc Today arrived to find somebody 2 sections down the hill has put up a 16m by 30,0000 foot advertising tower. at least 3 other 16 m sections adjoining so likely to be a repeat.
Im not against anyone making a dollar but no height constraints on advertising. Bet no one admits it but its obviously deliberate to cream more money out of land by selling in little bits.
Linden absolving yourself by saying not getting involved is pure Pontius Pilate act. and could eventually ruin sl for everybody who cant afford to buy their own island. if we all played by this same common denominator then we should all build walls up to 30,000 feet and to hell with everyone and any sense of esthetics or commuinity for gods sake..
Im not going to pay you linden each month to stare at bloody advertising so i may just put up walls as high as i can and say sodd you all. sell for what i can and look to see if anyone is developing a VR with something more than laissez-faire economics and philosopy
oh and i suppose the defence is caveate emptor. but where do you in anything say this sort of practice goes on or is allowed. are there advertising free areas. are there places with building limits on advertising. Shouldnt this sort of issue be at least acknowledged for noobies like myself.
Over past month i"ve put about $200 us into SL .I'm not about to do that again and may pull out which i will be sad about.
Of course this rant presumes someone who can control the strings actually cares I am not holding my breath

I'm very sorry this has happened, but it's a classic problem. If you were able to complain about a neighbour's build, then by the same logic the neighbour would be allowed to complain about yours, and a huge number of complicated judgments would have to be made, especially since they might be complaining just because they don't like you or want revenge.

This is the only reason I wont go premium and get mainland property .. I choose instead to live on an estate with a covenant to protect me against such ugliness I'm still enjoying my building experience without having to look at new junk appearing every new day outside my front door ... If one day LL decide to banish this rubbish I will go premium like a shot ...

New Land Feature Needed
05-07-2008 12:28
Recall in the land settings we are able to restrict spacialized sounds. What is sorely needed is a simular function only with reguards to what we see. Or perhaps see only my prims & my group prims. Ugly builds would then be out of sight and out of mind. Far to simple I know. Maybe thats the problem.

Isn't obtrusive advertising like this abuse-reportable now? Send an abuse-report, what they're doing isn't being cracked down on now as it ruins the value of the mainland.

Haravikk's right. This is known as "land extortion" or something. It's called an "ad farm," whereby the owner puts up hideous advertisements in order to get you to buy the lot for an outrageous price. You can AR (Abuse Report) the owner of the land and claim land extortion on the report. LL is pretty good about getting on this quickly; at the very least the ugly prims will be gone.
