I was wondering if it would be possible to increase the number of groups a person can belong to? Also, I was wondering why it was limited to 25 in the first place?

It used to be 15, if my senile old mind recalls correctly.

25 is more than enough if you ask me. I think there is bigger issues as well to be honest.

25 isn't enough for a lot of people I know, especially if you are a content creator/builder with clients.

The number should be increased, for example, if you rent a shop, most of the time you must be a member of the group to place your merchandise there......and if you rent many...well, you understand i guess..some ppl rent many shops, and would like to have some groups left for personal purpose don't you think?

1: I build stuff and rent from several malls and my own store: (6 groups)
2: I DJ.....A Lot. (10 groups)
3: I rp (4 groups)
4: DJ Fan Club (1 group)
5: Fellow DJ's fanclub's and vip groups (3)

Still seem like enough groups?

You are correct and we had to petition for....years? to get it increased. It's a database load thing people.

Seriously? The number of groups somebody is in hurts the database?

Not so much "how many groups" someone is in, but more "how many groups THERE ARE."
Giving us a 1 group increase does not raise the database load by 1*[# residents] (or about 5 million), it also allows all those people who were maxed out to CREATE A NEW GROUP which costs even more data than just joining a group.

Then wouldn't it make sense to limit the number of groups somebody could make but not the number they can join?

I still like the idea of charging us for extra groups. Wouldn't this help?

I wouldn't mind paying for 5 or 10 extra groups, regardless of what it cost.

No because people need to create groups regularly. Buy land on an island, you need a group. Have an event, you need a group. Planning a fundraiser, you need a group.

Buy new land with new people, new and different group. Holding a different event, new and different group. Planning next year's fundraiser with different people, new and different group.

Old and inactive groups no longer tied to any land and with no activity could, I suppose, be culled.

There was once talk of being able to create sub-groups within groups. That would definitely cut down on the group clutter. For instance: I have the host group, the DJ group, Managers, Vendors etc. all under my Island group. This way a person can join the Island group and be added to the appropriate sub-group. Of course, some people would not want to be added to groups they did not join. A blue request box can go to someone before they are added to sub-groups.

There's an interesting suggestion over at jira.secondlife.com to be able to send notices only to a group role, and not the whole group. In fact there is a whole lotta interesting group related stuff over there worth voting for :D

It might also help a lot if there were a lightweight "pass card" system.

Instead of the full blown group thing being used for simple access or permission passes like it is now, just make a access pass system. The passes could be tied to groups or to parcels or regeons. Simple and lightweight. 25 groups is not enough for anyone that does anything to anyserious degree in SL. 20 of my 25 groups are simple access control groups with only 5 being anything "fun" or of real interest :(
