Not recognizing MLK day in SL?

You know, I remember a year ago being on Second Life on Martin Luther King jr. day.
I remember how special I thought it was when I looked up at the SL sun and seeing the image of MLK Jr. in the sun. I couldn't believe it. It was subtle...yet inspiring! No special notices or announcements about it...It was just there if you took the time to look up and see it. I loved it. Even though linden has always had its issues with SL, it still seemed to take the time to enhance the SL experience with special little things like this for its users.
So today on this MLK day in SL I was looking forward to seeing that again. So what do I see when I look up at the sun?..
The sun! Nothing else! Just another day on SL!
What happened Linden? Has SL become just another business outlet that it no longer recognizes anything other than the dollar sign?

It could be because they're trying to be more internationally minded and now more residents are from outside the U.S. than from inside and Martin Luther King day is by and large a U.S. holiday.

Every day is MLK day in SL. Crossing color language racial gender lifestyle barriers.. to create together...to learn from each other..SL's seed and inspiration is largely what MLK was about and his message.

The question i would ask is' Was someone kind to me today"?.."Did some one extend a hand of generosity"?...."Was there a drop of mercy and forgiveness in my text when i spoke to my enemies?""Did i see any acts of tolerance and charity thru anyones or my actions?"..if the answer was yes to any of those questions then MLK day was recognised.

C'mon you don't need to see a pixelated pic of a mans face in the sun to recognise MLK day.Besides..maybe they did something different.

Gordon is right, i know the man and what he did but i had no idea there was a special day for him till a read about it on this forum. it seems like mostly a US holiday.

You're not using the WindLight client, perhaps, are you?

The sun isn't just any old replacable texture anymore.

Or... perhaps the Linden-in-charge-of-Holiday-Sun-Textures is no longer with Linden Lab and hasn't yet been replaced.

OR... ?less than half of SL residents are American? and LL felt that pushing national holidays on the majority of their customers was inappropriate.

I miss the holiday-sun too... but I won't stop using WindLight to see it.

True, but the idea behind his message is global. And since SL puts the world together in one virtual place it's an important message to recognize. The world knows who Martin Luther King Jr. was.
Every day is NOT MLK jr day in SL. I wonder how many reports of abusive racial slurs are made in sl every day? The 'Cosby greifer attacks' for example...I've experienced many...I know others who have as well. One just this week as a matter of fact. But that's just a reflection of the real world in sl..it's not paradise every day.
Yes we can forgive the ignorance of those who attack us.
But we shouldn't forget...Something like a 'pixilated image' in the sun may seem like a simple thing. Like wearing green to raise awareness of global warming...
But it can mean a lot to many people. even outside of the US.

I wasn't trying to berate your post. But again..i guess it's how YOU choose to recognise the holiday that really counts right?.The great thing about the human process is you can only control YOU..noone else...but you sure can show others a kinder way..thru your own actions?

And please remember the idea behind his message had a very strong religious foundation..that came from someone else? He was the messenger..not the creator of the content.

That being said..were you able to answer yes to any of those questions?...or are you only looking for LLs recognition of the holiday and nothing else.

If LL can recognize Valentine's Day they can recognixe MLK day.

Trust me..I never felt that your previous post was in any way berating.
My post was a reaction of feeling a bit let down that LL didn't follow up on what I felt was such a inspiring act.
MLK Jr was indeed a man of God. But he was also a political figure..Political in the sense that he was dealing with the relations of people. His actions were a REaction to the way people were being treated. Not only black people benefited from his, & the actions of others...but ALL people did. That's why we recognize him.
My post isn't an attack on LL. But in my point of view it is important.
LL is recognized in the news everyday for creating a place even the latest political candidates are using as a forum. They use it to their advantage to bring in more users.
It's a very simple thing.
So, if I recognize the day by sharing my thoughts here...as well as real life...
Let freedom ring!

Valentine's day is not just an American holiday though, unlike MLK day. A lot of users would be offended if we did 4th of July celebrations for the same reason.

I don't think they can do images on the sun any more. I believe the code for the sun in the last several release clients has been a part taken from the Windlight client.

I stayed up till 3 am waiting for them to change the sun. They didn't, and I was dissapointed. I still love and treasure SL, but it isn't quite as magical as it was when I joined in Sept of 06. I still remember when 13,000 people online at once was a lot, when Lindens answered calls for help, and etc. etc etc. The MLK Jr Day thing is just one more little thing that diminishes the magic a bit.

There have been great men and women in every country in the world, and there must be literally thousands around the world that are honored with public holidays.

The problem is there are not enough days in the year to remember all of them. MLK day is all but unknown outside of the USA, where as Valentines day is international. I would not expect LL to celibrate German reunification day for example, but that is important for those in Germany.

Why not? If they are trying to be so 'international' then unite us by recognizing the holidays we all recognize. How hard is adding a holiday calendar to the start screen or having Cinco De Mayo celebrated in some Latino Sims while German Town celebrates a German holiday? LL now has staff all over the world - and a very large community team (I know, when I call the customer service number I randomly get people in Australia, London and I-don't know-where). This is all part of CUSTOMER SERVICE. And we all know LL lacks severly in that area. These are the same people that thought it would be cool to close the grid on Halloween.

I've met more interesting people in SL than anywhere.

Count yourself lucky if you had the day off. I worked. No special "holiday pay" either, since the company doesnt recognize it as an "Official Holiday".

Gotta love that one- "If we ignore it, we dont have to close for the day or pay extra!"

Actually, I think that would become the job of the sim owner and not LL anymore, to have celebration occured in country-specific sims. Unless it's just a message/calendar on login screen, which would be LL job. Though, I think you'll likely see nearly every days on calendar a special day somewhere in the world ;p

I know 3 difference new years in difference system (not included 1 Jan), there're also monthly special days in various societies, 'independent-type' day for countries around the world, etcetc.

LL asked Sim owners to participate in community events and they always have. LL just coordiantes and the community steps forward everytime. To skip MLK is outrageous.

Like I said. Quite a big, organized celebration of a non-holiday by Linden Lab. Dead silence on MLK Day (which is a official holiday). Outrageous.
