For me it's very simple: my computer is a black box, or it works, or it doesn't work. Point!
In the case of Second Life, After every crash I've tro restart my computer 5, 6, 7 ... times before Second Life stabilises! I will not and I can not change computer hardware or software! It is a black box, just as my dishwasher at home!
New users will NOT accept this frequent / continue crashes combined with low performance in-between! This blocks the short term grow of SL more than other problems. Not solving this problem is the first step to the end of SL.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems but I'm wondering why you reboot as many as 7 times. If it takes 6-7 reboots to get the machine to settle down, rebooting probably isn't the thing that's 'fixing' SL for you..

When SL crashes for me, I go get a tasty adult beverage.
WTF is going on? I have to drink 5-6 before SL starts working again! LL is trying to ruin my liver!!!

Before you will ever get to a point where Second Life will run reliably and enjoyably for you, you will need to re-evaluate that statement. About the closest thing I can think of to which the "works or doesn't work" idea applies.. is a light bulb. Aye, 'tis a bit like expecting a car to off-road well without knowing what's in it or how it's maintained. I blame consumer culture.
WieBenIk, there's a lot of people on this forum that know about getting a computer to run SL; if you ask some of them they might help.

Computer applications in general are not Turnkey solutions. This may be the case in an enterprise setting where you have an IT dept. or If you are doing "Mac approved" things on a Mac. But the minute you "step out of your house" so to speak and you want to run somebody else's software you must accept a certain amount of responsibility. What any app needs to gain popular appeal is to keep that specialized knowledge to a minimum.

SL has some serious performance issues. However, WieJeOokBent, if you keep up that cutesy attitude of "look at me, I'm so not a nerd, I'm proud of not having a clue about the way my computer works and I think everybody should work around that" you will very soon be stuck in limbo not being able to play any current online game and blaming the game developers for it.
You are already wasting time rebooting so often when that is obviously not what is actually stabilizing SL in your case. Maybe you should consider using that time to educate yourself instead.

SL is an application.
Applications should NEVER crash the OS, or irretrievably hose it so that it requires reboots (even one, let alone several) to recover from it.
Granted that there are SOME applications out there which can and do crash the OS to this point, but SL does not fit into their category by any stretch of the imagination.
99.99999% of the time, problems like this are related to a mis-installed or corrupted OS, bad/outdated drivers, malfunctioning/bad/incompatible hardware, or other misbehaving applications (including viruses/trojans/spyware/malware) installed on the system.
It's the old "make sure your own house is clean before you try to clean up someone else's" situation. Granted, SL has a lot of issues, but crashing your computer is not assignable to SL being the ultimate cause.

A Possible Cure for your issues....

I started to write a breakdown of what a computer consists of, as well as hardware/software functions, drivers, chipsets, combinations....yada...yada...yada....
I realized that I would be wasting my time trying to explain to someone who has not the capability to understand, which was clearly displayed in the description "black box" compared to a "Dish washer"......and "...6 or 7 reboots....."
I have to say that with your admitted “black box” operating habits and understanding, you will always have problems with your "black box" , and will always have crashes and freezes....no matter who comes and fixes it. Some people are just not cut out to operate and maintain or even understand such a complex device (NO offense intended).
Get a Mac, they are for people who don’t want to know how it works, but just want to get on it, do whatever it is they need to do, and not have the grief, crashes, and constant headache. Personally, I have never used a Mac, but I understand why they have much less issues and are more reliable for users who want to USE a computer, not babysit it.
Take Care

Applications should NEVER crash the OS, or irretrievably hose it so that it requires reboots (even one, let alone several) to recover from it. This is true for Linux, you can crash the *DE (desktop environment) and nearly any other part of the opperating system and not need to restart the machine. I vaugely remember being told (in a "Learn Nix" class) to kill -9 the kernal and being able to (kill -9 is "close the process and stop running, don't ask stupid questions" or "end task" from the task manager in Windows). And then we restarted it. Winblows: you crash any "SYSTEM" or "LOCAL SERVICE" process and the entire OS is hosed and needs to be restarted.

From: Draco18s Majestic I use Windows, thank you very much. I hate it, but nothing else runs on my machine (actually, right now, my desktop lacks a BIOS). If nothing else runs on your machine, I guess it doesn't blow too badly. Many things run under system and local_service. Saying that shooting any of these will toast windows is either ignorant or flame bait.
