Negative ratings went the way of the Dodo over 2 years ago, before I joined.

I guess in LL infinite wisdom they decided we no longer need the ratings and that money we spent rating others was not worth any thing. Thank you LL for thinking that the ratings on our profiles meant nothing

There was a blog post about it at least a couple weeks before they shot ratings and there have been a number of forums threads about it.

They were removed in an effort to reduce load - since you could only rate somebody once, they had to keep track of not only each residents numbers but also of everybody who ever rated them.

Personally, I would rather they stayed. Most of the forum posts seemed to think that ratings weren't useful at all but I kinda miss them. :(

I am very frustrated that they took away the ratings. I worked hard to get high ratings and I was proud to have them. I wonder if LL will refund all the nice AVs that spent their money on my ratings!

Simple answers:

1--Ratings were meaningless as there was no ability to get bad ratings anymore (yes, removed about 18 months ago)

2--Many people "gamed" ratings before the rating system changed in 05. It used to be that your av was granted some extra L$ for good ratings...you may have noticed that before ratings were taken out, a lot of older members had something like +900 ratings.

3--LL needed to reduce server-load in order to improve things like Search. I think it's a trade off that's very worthwhile

4--You will not get refunded. Consider it a money sink. Did you really spend that much on rating others? Seriously? L$25 is US$0.15 at most...

5--There are alternate ratings systems available...though honestly, none of them are very good.

Wrong Dish water breath :)

No they were not meaningless,

No not everyone used to for their own gain,

No it had nothing to do with Load on the servers

No, I would never you those other offsite rating systems If LLABS took them off what in the hell would i even bother with offsite rating systems

1--Your opinion, not mine.

2--Never disputed...said some gamed them.

3--Yes, had everything to do with load. Read the official statements from Linden Labs.

4--I didn't say I used the other systems. Didn't I say they weren't any good?

Don't bother, Kenn - Usagi just loves to complain.

Pointing out what was actually said won't help.

Wrong sheetstain. ;)

They were LESS than meaningless, if that is even possible.

The fact that they could be gamed at all made them even more meaningless.

Their removal had everything to do with removing load from the backend. Removing a meaningless service reduces load. That's a good thing.

Glad you and Ken agree fully on offsite rating systems. Those are just as meaningless, and they aren't worth bothering with, pretty much like the defunct-and-now-happily-obliterated in-world ratings system.

LOL.. And who do you think I'm an alt of? Somebody who thinks you never do anything but whine? I'd bet that's a pretty long list.

I have 1 main & 1 alt and I did pay for the alt.

Abused system
05-10-2007 11:31
I've met a lot of people with really high ratings who were absolute dipsticks. There was no way they could be rated +158 for behaviour when they were the nastiest, petty, back-biting people you'd ever meet. Obviously they'd gotten an alt and just pumped up their own ratings or something. Easy enough to do, and no limits on it.

How somebody treats you is a better way to judge charactre. I never relied on those numbers because it was too easy to fake them, and one in four people with really high numbers I ever met were assholes, with me doing nothing to them first.

Good riddance to a bad system.

The previous system had issues - too easy to game.

The latest version didn't have that problem.

The problem with the latest (before "removed";) system is that there was no point.

Supposedly: Ratings were removed because looking at them caused lag.

(hold on.. still counting... okay that's 573 appearance ratings... hold on, I'm counting up your behavior ratings... one second! huf puff.. okay 489 of those... building ratings.. looking... 1, 2, 3.... wow.. that person had 10 of those.)

Easy to fix? Sure. But they were clearly being phased out anyway, easier to just pull the plug. I'd rather have them focused on more important fixes and changes than trying to tidy this up.

So.. For the one person that had ratings like that, they had to keep 1072 references to other people in the database. Remember: you could only rate somebody once.

The reasoning here is why bother bring up the rating system anymore its past right? Those the bitched enough caused the rates to be removed. Rates had their place in history and they did suit a purpose ( It was a different game back then ). What I can say now is I don`t live in the past like some do ( and wish they did ). The game moves on and so I and many that have lasted this long here. Really did it matter if someone had 500 rates for Each Appearance, Behavior, and Building? Many us that did rate purly did it out of what they show and experienced with those doing the behavior etc........NOT everyone rated attacked people. Not everyone rated for a higher Payday. Not everyone could afford to rate attack people ( i was poor i could not do it ).

Atleast my side of this issue i can talk about.

Thank You for reading
