Are we going to see a weblog posting about SLim sometime soon? Feels weird to be finding out stuff about SL from the newswires:

http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20080903005511&newsLang=en

before it shows up on the weblog...

Yeah... The best I got was a dodgy response from Torley during his office hour... But, that dodgy response said more than enough for me to be optimistic. (^_^)y

Well reading that article was sure an eye-opener. Especially this part here:
From: someone
“Linden Lab was one of the first companies to understand the truly transformative effect that Vivox voice can have in a virtual world. SLim is a bold, important next step in the evolution of Second Life and the industry in general,”

I guess LL came to this understanding after telling us first for 2 years that voice would never be implemented in SL and how they thought it was "wrong" along with the other reasons they felt so strongly against it.

Interesting.

/me points at the SL5B [Major Announcement]©®™ ....

At the moment, if you're not using voice you're merely a quirky pioneer that needs to fade away while the commercially viable users come in and instill their pragmatic values. (=_=)

it is perhaps lucky that the person who launched a (text based) SL instant messenger application also called SLIM over a year ago left SL due to medical reasons. Whilst I'm sure it wouldn't have stopped LL's SLim client, the fact that the original SLIM is now a distant memory has avoided some potential bad publicity on LL's part.

The idea of slimline messenger client is not new, and there are a few others out there. Part of the problem has always been the instability of the underlying API. Any new update to the client has typically required updating any third party IM clients - as regards voice, the closed source nature of vivox has meant no one has tackled that.

"8.5 billion minutes logged by Residents" - as always when LL (or Vivox) make these claims I wonder how much of this is real use, as opposed to someone just logging on with voice enabled in the client (so effectively connected to the vivox voice servers even if no sound or only white/background noise is being transmitted) either so they can see if anyone is trying to use voice to talk to them or just because voice is enabled in the client by default! My own experience is still that text tends to be the normal form of communication in most circumstances apart from lectures or public talks.

SLim may very well form a whole community of users who never use the 3D client - effectively becoming just another skype! This may serve Vivox's purposes extremely well but will it bring any benefit to LL?

Interested in the text part...

Yeah, my friends and I don't use voice to speak of (hahahaha) either, but this will apparently provide text-chat services as well, so I'm interested. (Can't decide whether or not being able to chat with my SL friends while not inworld is a good thing or not! I'm already getting no sleep heh heh.) I'm interested not only for my own use, but because in the AWG we're thinking about how group IM might work in OGP, and this seems relevant. For instance I'd like to know if it supports group IM at all! Or ad-hoc Friends Conferences. Or just one-to-one friend IM.

Linden Labs pleas announce SLim soon to us too!! It is confusing that the media announces release when it is not available to residents yet....:(

I did it like two months ago, it's just that nobody cares :)

Now I'm really sad :/

There was a second announcement out of Vivox, that they will be opening up some of their code (looksl like it will only be on the client side, much like how LL has been doing things). So in the longer run this could turn into something useful.

I read this earlier and I realized that Day Oh had already created a voice client months ago. It's a pity that none of you actually cared enough to read his post and use it, it would have saved you alot of waiting!

Great job Day :)

Looks like they just could have coordinated the various announcements a little better; if I was LL, I would have insisted on getting to do the first press release, not the last. :)

(Yeah, Voicebox looks very nice if you're interested in voice; I'm interested in SLim for the text aspects, though, not for voice.)
