When I log on I have no friends online. this is not possible because I have around 500 friends on my friends list. Someones suggestion was just wait a while. Thats ridicules,Then I would only see people that logged on after me and of course none of those people would see me online unless I logg off and on again. Which brings me back to no friends online. Endless loop of frustration. Oh and of course theres the can't see private sims on the map till you zoom in to about the last 5th of zoom. yet the 1 sim linden sandboxes show up much sooner than that .I brought this up last townhall months ago your response was something like "oh wow just noticed that well have to get that fixed " I know it's not nearly as important as a lot of these problems but still. sure would be nice to see the whole map someday instead of just linden land and the vast ocean surrounding it. oh yeah should frase this inthe form of a question ok what about that stuff I just said.

/signed.

This is SVC-85 in Jira, and as of yesterday was listed as a "hot, HOT issue this week" and being addressed.

My townhall question is "What didn't make it a hot issue for 6 months of complaints, bug reports, jira submissions, phone calls, in-person demonstrations of the problem, and emails? How do we make something a "hot issue" in < 6 months ?"

And Why is Friends Online "temporarily disabled"?
05-02-2007 07:55
I have the same problem as Gullwing. Ever since the upgrade my friends list has been incomplete or inaccurate, especially with regard to accurately tracking which friends are online at a given time.
SL is, for me, all about relationships and the loss of this vital tool has really diminished my enjoyment of the game.
I'm also sorry that it is no longer possible to see which friends are online on secondlife.com before choosing to go in world. Please explain why this feature is "temporarily disabled" and when it will return.

I checked the web friends list yesterday and it was working. Having trouble getting the page to load right now though.

Edit:
There it goes.

Friends Online

Friends Online. Friends Online. Friends Online. IN world and on the website.

This is one of the most important fetaures worthy of 24/7 reliability because of how critical it is to business and social interaction. Since SL is not a game, but a vehicle, and Friends online is the primary mechanism enabling the vehicle to work, it being broken is like driving a stick shift with an intermittently sticky clutch. The car might get you there but not very well, and you're probably going to take it to the junkyard if too many trips to the shop doesn't fix it.

I think part of the upset about this issue is based upon two very important factors:
1. Its critical importance to everything in SL and
2. The fact that LL has not addressed it in any way since the update on Wednesday when it got really broken. At least with Friends Online on the website, there was a failsafe when it broke in world. Now we don't even have that.

I think people want to hear that LL actually cares that this is not working (it's always helpful to say 'gee, we know, we see it, we agree, we are doing something) but more than that, it's not enough this time to just say 'we're working on it' since we've been hearing that since presence issues started being a problem last fall. I think we want to hear what others here have stated - in addition to an acknowledgement, a plan for addressing, and a timeline - not to 'fix it for now,' but to just fix it so it works, reliably and consistently.

If the answer is, 'we have no idea why this keeps breaking' or 'it's something in the underlying design and all we can do is band-aid until we figure out what's really wrong,' I think we want to hear that too. Not the best news but better than a 'don't worry, we'll fix it' only to have it break again with the next update or mad rush of new users. The repeat breakage is what erodes confidence. I know many folks who've been driven off of SL in recent weeks between the optional viewer debacle and really broken things related to load/etc.

Beyond that I think we (or at least, I) want a commitment that stability of critical features that have been in place for years without issue will take priority over new 'cool' stuff, always. I for one as a builder am interested in organic prims, but I can't function today without friends online, and so if resource are being devoted somewhere, I sure hope it's toward the thing that makes my car just work. The fancy car audio system isn't worth the investment if I have to push the car to get it where I'm going.

Thanks much.

Just to clarify:
You mean:
Not (working for everybody)
And not:
(Not working) for everybody.

Meaning...
It works for some.
As opposed to...
It doesn't work for all.

Yes, I'm sorry. The "friends online" website is reported as fixed, I'm saying it is not fixed for all at this point.

As of yesterday, it started working for me again. Just one data point, though. For those it's not working for, definitely re-report, since they're apparently saying it's fixed. Give'em some more data to work with that tells them "Not yet, buddy! Get back to work."

Not everybody, not all the time
05-02-2007 09:07
I should clarify that Friends Online in world does show people online some of the time for me anyway. But if I log in, it works, log out, log back in 10 minutes later, it will show empty, but friends are online. Even when it seems to be working, I will get the so and so is offline message without ever having seen them online. And there are some friends who log on who I never see, others I see more often. No matter how it's sliced, it's all defined as 'friends online not working.'

Whether it is some of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, doesn't really matter - it needs to work reliably, for everyone, all of the time, and we need to hear from LL what the plan is for making this happen.

Heretic, any thoughts about this?

It has randomly worked for me about once in the past two months.

I try to add my votes to this for JIRA, but whenever I log in to JIRA, it continues to insist I'm no logged in. After initially logging in to JIRA, it doesn't go to a log in page, but merely back to the page I was previously viewing (like, the log in page knows I'm logged in but nowhere else does).

I'd report it on JIRA - but see above.

EDIT: Sorry, logged in under the SLCC funds account! GRRR, I'm a moron.
