Please when are we gonna get windlight back. im so jelous when i see the pics that torley has posted. And whats worse is that i got a taste of it before they took it down. It ran ok for me. The graphical improvement was well worth the small bugs. Please please please rerelease this. I figured it would be out by now. They keep saying it is right around the corner like weeks ago. Just some thing, anything. lol. oh well i guess ill just have to look at torleys pictures with envy for the time being. love windlight. i really do. (feel free to post if you feel the same way)

30 seconds until the usual "Fix the bugs before adding stuff" post.
BTW, I liked windlight too. Going back to the old sky was a big letdown.

From Torley's wiki page: From: someone When is First Look: WindLight coming out again? Hopefully in a few weeks. I earlier hoped it would come out by the end of August, but it doesn't look like we'll hit that. The WindLight Team has been very busy fixing bugs (including those I've reported), and today, we just launched an internal testing round for Lindens (because previously, it was mainly just the WindLight Team using it). I apologize for the delay because I know how anxious a lot of you are, particularly from comments I've been getting on my snapshots. Also for emphasis, you should know (if you don't already) that WindLight isn't just about "pretty skies" — performance improvements, rendering optimizations, and code cleanup to improve the viewer are an important part of it too. It's a false dichotomy that we spar between bug fixes vs. new features, and I am dogged (and obsessed) about improved performance & stability (aka P&S) for Second Life.

It never did work for me, especially not if you deigned to rise above sea level. Warped horizons, no clouds, and a LSD-trip blue nova sunset. Horrible. Personally, it had a very long way to go before it would be the least bit useful, and most people with lower-end vid cards will be forced to do a hardware upgrade, or even to completely replace their computers, when Windlight becomes mandatory.
They should take their time, and not release it until they address the many problems that users reported.

I'm sure it would be difficult, but I really hope they can put in a preference to run without Windlight. From the server point of view, I'm sure that running two separate "skies" would be expensive. But ... there are a LOT of us out there with inadequate graphics chips.

If they can run a Windlight First Look viewer concurrently on the main grid with the normal viewer, WHICH THEY DID, they there is no technical barrier to allowing a single viewer to choose to display either normal skies or Windlight skies.
There is, however, a huge POLITICAL barrier, in that some high muckety-muck at LL convinced management that Windlight was the be-all and end-all add-on, and they will have a huge amount of egg on their face, and a large capital investment waste to explain, if they don't get the vast majority to adopt the Windlight interface that they insisted on purchasing. So I seriously doubt we'll have a choice.

no disrespect Nika,
I think if everyone on this forum who Ceera has helped at one time or another gave 500L for a new pc she would have it easily.

*giggles* Why thank you whyroc. And you too Nika.
However, it shouldn't be long now before I *will* finally have a new PC, thanks to all those who have hired me to build for them, or who have bought my texture bundles at TRU. I've been saving all the profits from my texture sales and my sim building business for the last several months, and I am within a few hundred dollars now of a new Mac system with a 20" cinema display and a 256 MB Radeon Graphics card. Once I get paid for a job I just finished, and for the one I am just starting, I'll be able to order it. Or sooner, if I can ever sell my 8192 M2 parcel of waterfront land in FairChang Palma...
If anyone seriously does want to help me, either buy the textures I sell at TRU (They all start with "TRU-CM" in the bundle name), or help me find a buyer for the lovely waterfront parcel that I am selling. IM for details.
I was sorely tempted to get an XP system instead of a Mac, which would have allowed me to get a 640 MB Nvidia card and a very fast Dual-core Atalon 64 CPU. But that wouldn't run most of the other software that my family and I use daily, and my family would get good use out of a newer Mac, but wouldn't touch a Win XP system. So... A less powerful graphics card for me, but a system that wil run my entire suite of applications, and keeps peace in my family. And moving from a pathetic 32 MB VRAM and 1 GB RAM to 256 MB VRAM and 2 GB RAM and a dual-core CPU that's twice as fast as my Mac Mini should make a world of difference for me in SL.

so slow

It's typical of LL to show us something that they neither have the intention, will, or technology to introduce yet and then take it away just as we realise how great it could be. Who knows now how long we will wait. My own voting Proposition 125 highlighted the severe need to dramatically upgrade SL in avatar making and body variations the current system being nearly 4 years old and despite many commercial gimmicks not ONE update of AV making. This vote was acknowledged yet nothing happens, and I gues Windlight will be the same. It was great and being forced back into the crap old sky and light was a mean trick.
Similarly we were supposed to be on Havok 2 ( which is now itself WAY out of date with Havok 4 being current ) 2 years ago and what's happened? - nothing!
LL is too bust with ways to increase commercial interests for sale value and with the ludicrous moral restrictions forced by a minority of people which play on LL's fear of slosing sponsorship and investment. Content Creation is almost dead and it's easier to wish for a new cash system than ask for beauty/content and creation improvements.

I have heard they have a large team working on this, or had anyway. I too have been waiting for an avatar upgrade but consider this. The economy runs on avatar enhancement primarily, what's gonna happen when that is broken by a new avatar system? All skins selling now likely won't work because the UV map will have to change. Its the same with Havoc 4 basically. The amount of bugs the introduction of these will produce upon implementation is gonna be mindboggling.
Everyday people complain about how unstable SL is, the frequent updates and the addition of features that introduce more bugs, imagine the uproar when everything breaks and people's ability to make money in SL is gone. The vast majority of SL users want dependability.
On the other hand, I've never really had problems running SL and I am eagerly awaiting Windlight and avatar upgrades. Gimmie

Windlight will vastly improve the look of the place. Will it also change the experience of the in-world lighting? For example, if I'm sitting in an enclosed room, will the light in that room be different? Will bad seams between prims suddenly be more noticeable? I'm already paranoid about builds-- need I become phobic?

Certain very popular graphics cards in combinations with Vista were not able to run windlight so until that is fixed, windlight should clearly stay on the backburner (unless there would be an option to switch to the old sky). Let's not try to push LL into releasing things so we can all later on complain about it again.

Does anyone know if SL has been rolling out some Windlight support server-side? My laptop has begun mysteriously blue-screening after much stability, no matter what client I use.
Done all the standard stuff, DSL OK, tried it totally without firewall/antivirus, lalala .... client only stays up now for a few minutes. On a laptop with marginal video chips ... but it was working fine until this last week.

My notebook freezes completely once I log in so i don't even try anymore :-/ . But on my desktop I really enjoyed windlight, it runs perfectly on my gfx card (radeon X1650). I'm waiting patiently for it to come and agree that having an option or seperate clients would work to satisfy users with high end machines and others without. Keep up the good work LL.

From: Nika Talaj Does anyone know if SL has been rolling out some Windlight support server-side? My laptop has begun mysteriously blue-screening after much stability, no matter what client I use. I suspect that the server side support has been there since before we got the first Windlight viewer. First, we got the "stupidly big sun" that Suezanne complains about. I've also noticed that if you fly up high and set draw distance to 512m, the distant sims render differently than they did a year ago. I'm not sure if either change would cause a laptop to blue screen, but if the blue screening is a recent thing, it might not be Windlight related.
