I know this got lots of mentions on the blog ( Linkage ) but thought a thread here might amalgamate the issue ProblemSL crashes to desktop just before an avatar appears in world unless the cache is cleared. This happens every time SL is started. SystemOS: XP Pro Processor: AMD Barton 2.8 RAM: 1.5 gig DDR GPU: ATi X1600Pro 512 meg / AGP, latest Omega drivers XP Swapfile: 1 gig on seperate physical harddrive SL setupWindowed, 1024x768 VBO on Cache 5000meg, in default location (ie C:/ Documents etc) All graphics options enabled, detail sliders one notch down from maximum Once the cache is wiped ( I manually delete the folder) SL starts and runs fine, till next boot. *EDIT* If VBO is disabled on login screen SL loads properly and I can reenable VBO once in game with the usual positive effects on frame rate etc

Hmm.. It has not crashed for me yet, curiously. I have restarted SL at least two times if not more.
In the hopes that maybe it will help them figure out what works or not, maybe to find what is wrong, I'll post my specs..
Windows XP Professional SP2, AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (running 32-bit Windows), 2GB Ram, GeForce 7600 GT (256mb). My XP swap file is 2048MB on C:
I'm running windowed. Windows XP's display resolution is 1152x864, I have SL set to take up almost all of it but the left edge of the screen.
Cache 800MB, set to f:\temp\secondlife F: is a separate physical hard drive.
I have all my graphics options on as well, detail all the way up. Bumpmapping on, ripple water on, avatar vertex program on. Bump Mapped & Cloth, Nearby local lights, high detail terrain, anisotropic on, OpenGL VBO on, graphics memory set at 256MB. Draw distance 128. Show avatar in mouselook on (*shrugs*). I have dynamic reflections turned on.
Note: Only tried with version 57520, have not tried 57575 yet.

I was able to use the viewer (the new one) a few times and it was fine then it started crashing over and over and well never stopped I will try whiping the cache and see if this is the cause here
but yeah it loads into world and then crash ever single time now and I have returned to the regular viewer as a result
the fix they introduced today after this crashing was reported is still occuring
AMD athlond 64 X2-4800+ dual Core Processor Corsair TwinX 1 GiG PC 3200 Pro memory Asus A8x-SLi NForce$ SLI MOtherboard BFG 7900GT 256 MB PCI-Express Video Microsoft Windows Pro XP with service pack 2
my cache is on the same drive and its 500not 800 not that it matters? lol
edited in later: cleared the cache for SL and it works fine again till reboot I just tried it let me inword the first time

CPU: AMD (2486 Mhz) 4400 amdx2 110 watts Memory: 2048 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) (Japanese) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 7900 GTX/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! 512 memory OpenGL Version: 2.0.3 Asus A8x-SLi NForce SLI Motherboard VBO ON ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I had a few issues with its crashing my system 100% I thought it was over heating but i checking the heats temps and i and within the happy zone. Looks like the client is just at this point so badly coded. Are you dumping your cache before each starting of the first look client? I do this. If i don`t I crash to hell. After I clear it i can run great, until the client desides it wants a break and crashes itsslelf to sleep. Hope this helps Usagi

I can't run the FirstLook viewer (any of the last two) without turning *off* VBO before starting. Once it's running I can turn VBO on and it will run for a while.
Don't have to clear cache. After a crash, though, I have to through and reset the cache location, size, and some graphics settings (memory used by card, for instance). System: eVga 680i, 4GB RAM, 2 eVga 8800GTS, Windows XP SP2

I use to have to clean cashe offen at startup. But now i stable. But people are still having issues od stablity on startup. I wonder if those 8800 GC drivers are the issue here.

crashing to desktop

I am experiencing this same problem. I was clearing the cache and restarting and that worked in the previous version. Since downloading the update I have tried many things and I cannot login to SL with the firstlook viewer. Please help if you know a fix.

I am not having that kind of problem with this client. But FPS are sure down. I tried playing with the turning off the one core no real change a times. But i Have noticed in high population sims the one core does improve fps. But not much, and does a dive again after awhile. I not really sold on sold on this release......... :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CPU: AMD (2486 Mhz)-4400x2 110 watt Memory: 2048 MB+1024 OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) ( Japanese ) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 7900 GTX/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! 512 EXTREME OpenGL Version: 2.0.3 A8N-SLi Premium

That's probably because it clears the cache on startup every time.
One hopes that this is not intended as the "real" fix.

Now getting the crash on startup bug again, only fix i can find his time is too disable VBO until actually in world then reenable it.
Clearng cache (even tho it is supposed to be done automatically it still has content?) dosent work for me this round.
See post around 53 [link=http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/07/first-look-update-113357787-available/#comments]here[/url] for exhaustive kind of tiresome details lol.

Same issue, crash on startup. Disabled VBO on statup and got in fine. Cache seems to not have anything to do with this issue.

This sounds strange, I no longer crash at startup. And this resent update has slowed FPS rates down a bit. ITs more then likey people need to go back and make sure their GRAPHIC CARDS Memory setting it correctly set to they INSTALLED graphic card. I seeing more user problems where users are not correctly checking their memory amount for their prefer graphic card memory.

I'm having the crash to desktop, also. I was able to use the viewer for a while, then it began the crashing after a log out one day and hasn't worked since.
I've cleared the cache, moved the cache folder, turned off VBO, uninstalled-reinstalled 3 times... And still it crashes to desktop just as i'm about to load the world screen... My avatar appears in world (i've met her when i load a different account shortly after crash in the regular viewer) and I hear the IM ding, but can't get a display.
When it *was* working, i noticed a nice increase on FPS and panning was smoother. I've been unable to find anyone offering a solution that works for me as yet for this problem.
