 There are gray areas appearing on the horizon, not completely randomly, you can turn and they vanish and turn back and they reappear.

Per the about sl section:

The bizarre appearance of the water is really more of a problem than the gray thing. The water appears to be curving up.
This effect appears when you are high up.
I get the feeling Windlight is design for viewpoints near the ground, or at least it's implementation in SL is designed for viewpoints near the ground without proper concern for how high up users commonly have their viewpoints.

I think you are right about the ground orientation. I get anomalies too but only if I'm flying.
