After downloading and installing the FirstLook update, text not longer works on the update screen.
I'd bug report, but I can't tell what my settings are anymore as the text isn't rendering correctly.

Take a look at my blocks-for-letters here:

Restarting the viewer hasn't done any good.
Windlight has no problems loading.

If it's a Prefs issue, please walk me through exactly where to find each option. I can't read any of the text anywhere.

<random guess>
Did you set SL to run in Korean or Japanese?
</random guess>

Make sure the viewer isn't running and open Explorer (the normal kind) and in the address bar type (and enter after): %APPDATA%

(That should put you in the appropriate X:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\ folder)

Open the "Second Life" folder there, then "user_settings" and you see various settings*.xml files (or one depending on all kinds of viewers you've previously installed).

The current WindLight uses the settings.xml for me (instead of the logical settings_windlight.xml), but it won't hurt to check for each one there.

Open the file(s) in Notepad and look for (they're sorted alphabetically):
From: someone
<!--Language specifier (for XUI)-->
<Language value="en-us"/>
If it's not present, SL is using the system default so just copy/paste-add the bit above in case it's confused, if it's present and has something other than "en-us" ("jp" for Japenese for instance), simply replace it with "en-us" and open the viewer again to see if it helped.

---

In case it sounds too intimidating the visual run-through is:
"Preferences" - the top right button of the 4 blue buttons at the bottom (although it seems the blue buttons are actually white highlighted for you :p)

The "General" tab (the very top button on the left) and the drop-down at the very button (English should be listed in English, but just in case it's the second option there).

"OK" is the left-most blue button of the three at the bottom.

And then just close the viewer and reopen to see if it helped :).

Thanks for the detailed response!
I checked setting.xml... it's missing those lines entirely. (though I do think it was set to use system default. Does it matter for the Korean/Japanese display if I actually have a Unicode font, and additional Japanese fonts?
settings_windlight.xml has the language lines, set to en-us.

Tried adding the Language lines in between InventorySortOrder and DO NOT MODIFY Version Number (same location in settings_windlight.xml), then restarting Windlight - no change.
Restored to former settings.xml

Went through Prefs as you specified - Language was already set to English (but was NOT written in English, same blocks as everything else). I think I tried that before...
Restarted Windlight, no change.

Any other ideas?
I thought adding the language lines in settings.xml would help, but that didn't work. o_o
Hmm. My other settings files (settings_beta.xml, settings_firstlook.xml, settings_voicefirstlook.xml) all similiarly lack those Language setting lines, yet I've never had this issue with them.

For the record, the regular veiwer's text display is still normal.

Thanks for the help - even knowing what doesn't work is still a form of progress.
