When I started Second Life, the way the trees change shape, appearing to be completely different species of trees, different sized specimens of different species, no less, at different distances, really looked rotten.
It still does.
Lately I was told that setting RenderTreeLOD to 2.5 will make them stay at high detail level.
It sure would be nice to have a way for this setting to stay permanent.

You can do the same for the land LOD and the prim LOD. I like setting all the LODs to 5.0 The MAX the UI goes to is 1.0. Yes, it SURE would be nice to be able to set thhose values in the UI to ATLEAST 4.0 if you've got a card that can take it. 0.1 to 1.0 is NOT nearly enough of a range. 1.0 causes LODS to start ocurring from as little as just 3-4 meters on a 1 meter object

Really LOD needs to take better account of frame-rate, if your frame-rate is nice and high then it can afford to leave some objects at a higher-detail. Give us a way to choose a target LOD to determine how aggressive it'll be and I'll be happy.

My approach to the shape and color changing tree has generally been to turn the detail all the way down. People that design places with lots of trees might want to keep in mind that to some folks the Linden trees look real bad because of the way they change size, shape, color and style of foliage at different distances.
I guess that's what I'll do, turn the detail all the way down for the trees. The trees look terrible with the detail turned all the way down but at least they don't change size, shape, and color as you get change your distance from them, and it doesn't seem to change the LOD from all the way down up to something higher all the time.
The place looks too bare with the trees turned competely off.
I suppose I should be glad the trees don't at some distance turn into mounds of writhing worms or some such thing.

So uh... with the latest windlight I notice that at least the Objects LOD and the Terrain LOD on the UI are now adjustable to 2.0 at max (or Ultimate) setting. That's better anyway
