I have set up SLim viewer and additional software as described on the download page.

I get my friends list 20 last evening. But all of my 20 friends have an incompatible viewer according to SLim. I know that 70% of my friends use the standard viewer the other 30% the candidate like i do too.

Which viewers work with SLim?

Is the error text i get accurate or is the problem on my end (SLim client installation, SLim viewer).

I'm well aware that its a beta and the risks that brings.

The overview on the downloadpage says:
"Residents using the SL viewer can use the usual viewer communication controls to text or voice chat with SLim users, and SLim users can communicate with SL viewer users."

From your answer i understand that its not correct and that "using SL viewer and the SLim client simultanuosly" should be added.

I'm not at home now so i will try it this evening and report back.

(I apologize in advance for writing such a whiny email, but I am a little frustrated.)

I wish I had read this thread BEFORE downloading the thing and trying (unsuccessfully) to get it working.

And yes, I know it's an old old thread, but I searched for "SLim". This thread came up, and nothing is different from what I read here.

I don't understand the point of it at all. An IM client that only works if you have the viewer open? Why? To me, that's like buying the apartment next door just so you can have a second phone.

What I was *hoping* for was an IM client I could use where the viewer doesn't work. For example, at my office, where our firewall blocks SL. An IM client that allows me to talk with friends who are inworld WHEN I AM NOT would be SO useful.

Gnomair, Sleek, Metabolt don't work for me. They're also blocked by the firewall. The web interfaces (ajaxlife.net and moveablelife.net) are good, but unreliable.

I would pay cash money (USD) for such an IM client. Really I would. A little desktop app with an interface as nice as AjaxLife, that connected as reliably as the SL viewer. It would be sweet.

That can't be right ha ha!
That would be ridiculous!
You MUST be mistaken. Surely. <shuffles off to search for more with worried look...?

It's only to be used on a certain viewer and the SLim client itself. Your friends must be using the SLim client, or using that particular SL viewer to have it working. It's not on the main viewer because it is very confusing for most people.

Yes, it sounds stupid, and if you don't plan on testing it at the moment; it is also stupid to use it in the first place before it's even out of beta. Unless you can get all your friends to download and use that particular SL viewer, it's only for shits and giggles right now.

Again:

1 - You download the SLim client itself.
2 - You download the designated SL viewer that is to be used with the SLim client. No, not the regular SL viewer, and no, not the RC Viewer - the SLIM viewer that is made to be used with SLim.
3 - You run this SLim viewer while the SLim client is running - so it can download your friends list (you only need to do this once, or to sync the names every time you add a new friend to your SL friends list).
4 - You continue to log into that certain SL viewer you downloaded earlier to talk to friends from SL to SLim.
5 - To talk to friends using SLim while they are in SL, they must be using that same exact particular viewer you downloaded earlier - the one that is made for SLim.

As you can see, it's kind of a pain in the ass and a bit useless at the moment. It's really only available in the first place right now so people can test it out and see for themselves, and spread the hype about the "up and coming cool new SLim thing".

Sooo... we download and install 2 peices of 3rd party software, enter our loggin details including password (against TOS to share your PW with a third party), then login the SLim client to download your friendlist into this 3rd party software.. logout, then loadup a 3rd party software and chat to no one, as no one with half a brain, would be using SLim in the first place, so none of your sane friends are using it, so you cannot chat to them.... Yep, sounds logical.

To set up your friends list, you need to run SLim and Firstlook simultaneously *once*. You also need to be logged in to voice while doing that (white dot over head). As soon as the FL has been synched successfully you can use SLim to see your friends without logging in to SL.

However SLim only communicates with friends who:

- either are in SLim as well (indicated by a cube icon)
- or are in Firstlook with voice enabled (hand icon).

The same is true vice versa. When in SL you can see SLim users (indicated by a cube icon) only when using Firstlook with voice enabled.

Sounds wonderfully simple.... now where did I leave my HexDecimal bible?.....

It's logical if you want to test it out with your friends. That's what it is for. Definitely not for casual use at the moment.
