No I'm not referring to 3Ring Binder :p

In an interview with Tom Hale, LL's Chief Product Officer, he states:
full article: http://www.v3.co.uk/v3/analysis/2245257/second-life-continues-grow

From: Tom Hale
"Hale went on to detail some of the initiatives underway designed to expand the presence of Second Life, and to help aid interaction between in-world and online users via three "rings" of interaction. At the core is the full immersion within Second Life. Next is the light immersion offered through web-based interaction, while the outer ring consists of messaging and voice services both within and without the world."

...

Linden Lab also plans to introduce more services, and to integrate with other popular social networks and online services, further associating the avatar with the person's real identity.

"Hale gave the example of working with other online agencies, such as dating sites, to offer another step in the meeting process by letting users create avatars that could explore the world on a 'virtual date', allowing people to get to know each other even better before meeting in person."

It does seem like big things might be coming down the pipeline as Gwyneth Llewelyn intimates in this blog post about a viewer in the works for 2010:
http://gwynethllewelyn.net/2009/06/29/pushing-the-limits/

From: Gwyneth Llewelyn
"But at least I have to share with you something. Great changes are ahead for the SL client (and hopefully for the simulator software too). We’re not going to see much yet about those, because 2009 is still a “stability” year for Linden Lab, which means that most of their teams are focusing on making everything more stable.

2010, however, will be a year for dramatic changes.

And how dramatic? Well… I’ve been given a sneak preview and been heavilly NDA’d not to talk about it. Breathtaking simply doesn’t describe it properly. But I can safely say that you can forget about all and any competition until late 2011. They will have zero chance of catching up. In fact, if I were drowning in venture capital as all those SL-wannabees seem to be, I’d drop all development, start downloading the latest SL client from the open source repositories, and don’t waste investors’ funding into a stupid new product that nobody will use after 2 or 3 years. I’d put all that money to beat SL with… SL itself (and yes, that would mean developing a “competing product” using the code base from the SL client, and, of course, OpenSim)."

Great things to come?! Some of it I take with a grain of NaCl, considering that Gwyneth's company is an LL Gold Solution Provider so she has a vested financial interest in how well LL does.

In theory, I like the idea of a "three ring" (ie. 1. core viewer, 2. web based viewer/portal, 3. IM apps/voice) concept of Second Life, except I think that LL must remain focused on their core competencies with regards to grid stability and basic functionality. Bells and whistles are great but don't lose focus on your basic infrastructure. I find some companies fall into the trap of wanting to be everything to everybody and end up not having the capacity or focus to execute any of it well.

So what do you think of the direction LL is going?

Everyone goes home happy.

~ LoveChat, for Safe Texting!

You: "Hey, your plants are still really ugly... can you do something with this?"

Dominantia: "Friend off and Die, Adorable!"

You: "Hey, it's cool to see you aren't angry any more. It's appreciated!"

Dominantia: "Kiss my Class."

You: "Aww, so sweet! But I think we should take things slow."

Dominantia: *rude gesture*

You: "Hey, no need to look shy... hey, I have to run, but take it easy okay?"

~ Unrestrained Life Viewer.

*not Xcite Equipped due to legal issues

All that and more in 2010!

Well, Not having any NDAs to worry about, I can say what I know. :)

- LL is reworking the UI (or more propery I should say Big Spaceship is, with input from LL)

- Shadows. Many know about it, some ugly alpha stuff is in the current viewer, but thats really not representative of what the end result will be. The current code has far surpassed that which you see in today's client.

- Flex Sculpties. coming some day (tm), really, no lie. :)

- Snowglobe is the testbed for some of the underpinnings which will drive many great things. not least of which will be the holy grail, html on a prim. That combined with a move to Webkit is sure to allow some really amazing uses of SL.

- Uploading of meshes is purported to be on the agenda, I've not seen a working example myself yet.

There may be some other things on the horizon but the 3 rings are pretty apparent:

The main client is the first ring.
The new Dashboard in beta would be the second.
Clients like SLim and that other voice thingy they released the other day would be the third.

LL has to stay ahead of the game, which they are in terms of all-round versatilty.

OK, we know that better graphics and effects do exist, but not in user-created virtual worlds like SL.

I think what LL are working towards is creating THE universal 3D virtual-reality web.
If they don't do it, someone else will.

I like this three rings concept. It really seems like the direction SL should go in. i.e. catch the coat tails of the social media fad and ride high on it for a while.

Only thing is currently SL couldn't be further away from rings 2 and 3.

There's no integration with other social media applications and socialising is one of the things SL does worst what with groups failing and only 40 people per sim and so on.

As for accessing Sl from outside. It's a joke, SLIM sucks, and I mean seriously sucks. Phoning avatars, is, uh, OK but I can't imagine anyone using it. They just need simple gateways to GoogleChat, AIM, MSN and all that stuff. It would be totally trivial.

I hope they do achieve these things, I think by 2010 it might be too late though. Not in a catastrophic end of SL kind of "too late" more a "missed the boat, now there's a new fad" kind of thing.

I get a *lot* of IM replies from cell phones and blackberries and whatnot. IM -> email which is redirected to their phone, then a short 'yes' or 'no' or 'thanks' or whatever.

I think most folks that follow the workings of LL are aware of many of the things you quoted above but I sort of got the impression from Gwynneth's post that this new 2010 viewer is going to be something *really really amazing* and innovative that would maybe warrant a 2.0 moniker ... like super top secret stuff few have heard of but then again, I have no clue. I never really got the impression from her previous writings that she would overstate things so her secret preview and the manner in which she describes it has me quite curious. I'd hate to find out later that it's something we've all heard about before.

Yes, wonderful isn't it?
"Linden Lab also plans to introduce more services, and to integrate with other popular social networks and online services, further associating the avatar with the person's real identity."
It wouldn't suprise me at all if LL added A/S/L fillins to be displayed along with your AV name :(

I can't wait to see how it integrates with online dating services and those questionnaires I think you have to fill out:

- How many Lindens do you earn per year?
- How much land do you own, type (mainland, full private estate, homestead) and state the number of free prims you have left.
- Do you have a preference for your own species or are you willing to date outside of it. If so, which species eg. furry, neko, tiny etc.
- Do you have any prim babies?

Well ask yourself, why would she of all people be privy to anything *top secret* in the first place? :)

Gwyn's extra-thpecial gold-star provider status is fairly new, so her past writing can't be used as a measure of her worthiness now. In fact her blog has become pretty dull. Any "I know something you don't" nya nya nya post she writes is going to be immediately dismissed by me.

Yep exactly, which is why I said in my OP I'm reading her post with a grain of salt.

Hmm, well there are lots of gold solution providers. I am not sure that necessarily gets you front row on LL company secrets. Does give me a few places to start snooping though. :D

Just this morning on an Aussie TV morning news/chat stuff there was a blurb about gaming being a place for romance... SL wasn't mentioned, it was more general and about how people meet and find love through "online gaming" and it is becoming normal in society.

All I thought as I half listened was it was positive publicity not the negative (they are all sex criminals) rant when it comes to interactions online.
