Hoping I am putting this in the right spot. My sim is hosting a three day yard sale and we wanted to publicize it, or at least portions of it in the event area. There did not seem a great classification for it, I suppose the closest would be commercial? or would it be micellaneous? What is the best and correct way to publicize this event?

An event is framed by a beginning and an end time. Thus '24hr Sales' are not events.

The 'Commercial' category was created for the purpose of grand openings, demonstrations, product launches etc. Each of these types of events should have a clear beginning and end time attached. Otherwise, they belong in the Second Life Classifieds, not the Events calendar. Posting events that are simply advertisements will not be acceptable.

Now that being said.... IF you insist on posting a 3 day yardsale... I would say commercial as it is actually selling stuff, and a commercial type venture

Things like "all-day sales" are not supposed to be posted in Events.

Though I know of one place that has been posting all-day "yard sale" (though it is really a disorganized, open-air shop selling an unlimited supply of the same items every day), 8 3-hour events per day, for at least 2 years and three months straight now. And I checked, they are still doing it, just like the first day I came to SL.

yep I have seen people doing it since I started SL 3 years ago...

no one seems to do anything about it which is why it is full of junk (I rarely, maybe once ever few months, look at event listings)

Well, how else would you advertise a 3 day event such as this? (And I'm only considering advertising the highlights in the event forum) Ours really is an event, not just a store having a "sale". We have 10 or so different residents putting out items, but we really want it to be open to the public and have some new faces come and explore our community. We'll have a couple other smaller things going on like fishing, some games and such.

Would you place a classified ad (which runs for 7 days) for a 3 day event?

How else would you get the word out? There do not seem to be many good options.

We (some people in the forum) did a 1-week yard sale not long ago, which we posted under Commercial. It needed 2 of us to do the postings because of the number that one person can post in 24 hours (I think it's 5). And it worked - plenty of stuff was sold. So go ahead and post it.

You may not look at event listings, Rhaorth, but lots of people do. :) I do get new people at my place when I post my events there. I've had more reliable results from event postings, in fact, than from just about any other kind of advertising I've tried.

I think a yard-sale is a commercial event and is a perfectly appropriate use of the Event listings.

You're right, there are no good advertising options.

What you are proposing to do does break the written Event guidelines. However, Linden Lab does not appear to enforce those guidelines.

So there's the philosophical question: If a rule is written but not enforced, does that rule really exist?

I'd say no, it doesn't exist.

Thinking about it, it might be easy for you to post your Event and comply with the written rules.

Instead of treating it as one 3-day event, treat it as 24 3-hour events.

Have some sort of slightly different theme to each event. If you have freebies to give out, give out a different freebie to each event. Have your host or hostess dressed in a different kind of theme costume for each event. Just some small thing to give each 3-hour block a different feel to it, something that marks the end of one block and the beginning of the other.

And of course you need to have a host or hostess for each 3-hour block.

If you get creative with it, it may even help your advertising and set you apart from other competing sales.
