How to reduce quality? - no, seriously

(This is not an ironic thread complaining about updates).
Lots of advice on how to improve quality, but what I'd like is advice on how to get the minimum basic quality for when I am using an old computer and poor internet connection. (With my new super dooper stuff at home the question doesn't arise, but from time to time I want to log in from other places and systems, even a dial-up).
OK I found that carrying the SL software on a stick works, and also reducing the speed to the minimum in preferences. But what about all the other settings and options and versions? Is there a 'basic' set of options that just keep things ticking over, requiring the minimum memory, speed, and Mbs?
For me, 'basic' means written chat, TP, seeing nearby objects and people (say, as well as I can in RL without my glasses), spending money, and pose-balls to be um friendly.
*edit; also when using services that charge per Mb used - not sure if minimising Mbs would be the same as optimising for speed, etc.

I don't know much about hardware so I can't really help you but I must ask if it's really possible to get SL on a dial up? I can't even imagine the best system out there would be any good.

Other than cranking the graphics options down to the minimum and the cache options up to maximum, and telling it you have minimal bandwidth, there's not much you can do.

Oh, and every official spec since time immemorial has said that SL will not function on a dialup connection.

I would never, EVER try to run SL on dial-up.

If you just wanted the chat aspect, you could try SLeek or one of the other lightweight clients...no graphics, but at least you'd be able to communicate.

There's also an excellent post on SLUniverse describing how to optimize your setup for SL.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

My friend use to use dial up on SL I will ask her.
Another option is you could use the non-graphic browser version I don't remember the name, where to find it but someone might now.
I tried to do search on 3rd life browsers but I couldn't Google it properly.
