https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/features/blog/2009/10/15/next-chapterFrom: Philip Rosedale I'm starting a new company, and wanted to let you know. It's a big idea - something that actually depends on Second Life existing to get started, and that I have been thinking about almost as long as I've been thinking about Second Life. I don't want to try to explain the idea here, because it is a decision I've just made and honestly I don't think I can do a good job describing it yet. But I did want to tell the whole SL community, because I don't want you to worry that anything is wrong:
I will still be chairman, as I have been since leaving the job as CEO. The change is that I'm not going to be working full-time at Linden Lab anymore (some of you might have thought I wasn't still there, but actually I have been!). I'll still be doing the same outbound and media type things as before - talking about Second Life, etc. If this has already been posted here, sorry.

Once thee Class Action lawsuit on Content theft and the new one gaining momentum (LL giving some Land Barons cheaper opensims so they can under price the other land barons and put them out of business), Phil will have his name off of everything Linden Lab so his personal fortune cannot be attached to any judgments.
Phil's new business is the new umbrella LL will be functioning under afterwards. The Social Networking Company formally known as Linden Lab.
When the owner bails - it is time to get the hint.

I'm wondering if he will be working on Snowglobe anymore.
I've enjoyed being a SL user and seeing Philip's dream develop. Thanks for a lot of fun, Philip.

If I was a millionaire and wanted to buy 250 regions you bet your booties I would be taking M and Phillip out to a fine dining experience while at SLCC negotiating for a hefty bulk discount. That is simply the way of business. I know it sounds horrid and all but seriously the big money players do such deals all the time. I've made big discount deals on behalf of the companies I have worked for. All the while wishing I had the big bucks necessary to make such sweetheart deals on my own behalf.
How about something closer to more resident's pocket books? xstreetsl.com enhancements cost the same whether your products are high end, mid range or economy priced. So if you are in the economy side of the business catering to the people with less funds to spend then it takes a lot more sales to pay for an enhancement. so where is the fair in that? Does anyone expect LL to make any changes to xstreet enhancements to make them sensible by making the price of the enhancement relative to the price of the product? No takers?
So it is OK for LL to be mean on xstreet but not ok for LL to cut deals with large scale bulk quantity customers?

From: Lias Leandros When the owner bails - it is time to get the hint. He'll be back. SL has too much of him in it, at the prime of his life, for him to not care deeply for it, no matter what happens. He'll buy the tattered remains, or they'll draft him, but he'll be back. Good luck, Phil, and thanks for all the hippos. We'll keep a few in our closets and under our sexbeds for you.

From: Briana Dawson Phillip is jumping ship because LL is on the verge of sinking. No other reason. From: Lias Leandros When the owner bails - it is time to get the hint. I suppose it's inevitable that folks will think these things, but really it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong. Philip is a "serial entrepreneur" - a person who gets his kick from seeing ideas morph from big concepts into meteoric growth. He has stuck with LL longer than most company founders would have. It is time for him to move on - if LL as a company is going to achieve a successful endgame, some decisions are going to have to be made that Philip will not like. ETA: Well, as he hints in his blog posting, some have ALREADY been made that he does not like. I'm sure the manner of Robin's departure was not to his taste. And some of the recent policy moves .... Plus LL has gotten large enough (well over 300, isn't it?) that managing the place involves a huge amount of personal discipline and boring day-to-day WORK. Neither of these are usually sought out by CTO types like Philip. Good luck, Pip!

The Heart is being removed? Well, there must be a transplant from a compatible donor. Failing that, an artificial device must be installed. I doubt a transplant will take. The Karma will go with the old one. An artificial one will need replacing at times. SL will not be the same. "Residents" will become "Users".
Yes it's been in the pipeline since Phil dropped out as CEO but now it's official! SL will survive and grow beyond expectations... someday.

I'm sad that Phillip is stepping back. It seems like all the old LL gang have now left....the visionaries. Phillip was charismatic and had personality.
Looks like Mitch Kapor is driving things along with his henchman M.Linden at the helm along with all the other faceless corporate types.

/me is sad to see Philip moving on but do wish him the best in whatever he's scheming. Some people in this world do such cool things that they should get some sort of cosmic tenure - I'd vote for Pip to get this.

I do think that any fantasy and whimsey SL had left was because of The Codpiece as well. The less influence he has the worse of SL will be. It is on the road to banality.

Does anyone else think that Philip wishing to be refered to as "Pip" has a bit of a "Puff Daddy"' "P Diddy", "Puffy Combs" flavor to it? Or does it just speak to the person's level of immaturity (a grown man going from Philip to "pip" as perhaps an indicator of a lack of commitment or sense of personal responsiblity? Maybe I just come from a different mindset; I think you should see a thing thru once you start it. It would be different if this platform was anything close to stable, reliable, or secure, but it seems to me that it's just a big mess. Maybe Philip is just an Idea Man. I was swooned by his ideas at first, to be sure. But it's a lot easier to follow around an Idea Man who's dreams are fulfilled then it is to follow someone who spouts off a lot of fanciful tales and skips out before anyone ever knows if any of it will actually work the way he's hawkin'. I'm sad to see Philip go. To me, it means SL will never be what he presented it to be at the beginning. So I won't be surprised if his Next Chapter doesn't end the way I want it to either.

Wait...he wants to be called Pip? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IaNaQHjIRE&feature=relatedActually that necessarily is a bad thing. After all that sense of playfullness is what gave SL it's charm to an extent, and that will be lost with his departure. I don't necessarily see it as a sign of immaturity. Maybe he just sees that SL is headed somewhere he doesn't want, and can't do anything about it. Who knows what boardroom discussions took place, he may have been "asked" to step aside. In anyevent, the purge I think is in full throtlle mode, now. I do think SL will be a colder, less fun, more "real" place moving forward. And that makes me have a supersad.

I'm very interested in seeing the development of Philip's new project I really think he can (somewhat at least) succeed in it.
