Hi all, newcomer here with a question.

I grabbed some free clothes from here and there. They show up in my inventory under objects, and when I drag them onto my avatar I get a billboard or a bag attached to my arm or leg or whatever, that I have to detach. No clothes, just the thing that I originally clicked on to grab the freebies.

What am I doing wrong?

thanks in advance.

Drag that object to the ground. It will rez as a box, shopping bag, etc.

Right-click, select Open, then copy items into inventory.

After you're finished copying the items into your inventory always remember to (right-click) Take or More > Delete your box, shopping-bag, etc.

Why do some vendors give boxes, anyway? Usually when buying stuff I get the whole set in a folder, no unpacking required. Using boxes seems pretty superfluous. Are they a relic of past times where the server just wasn't able to send items in a folder, only in another object/prim?

vendors need items boxed

some scripts that take care of gift cards or "credit cards" require the items to be boxed

and some folks box them just because it seems like the common thing to do

My biggest gripe with boxed items is that everyone sets their land as no-build because of the griefers. So once I buy it, I have to TP somewhere to unbox it, then come back. Every now and then I will see someone who has a very small section of their store set to be able to rez objects, and I really like that feature.

Saeshin, you are going to want a list of quality sandboxes. I'll start you off with a few.

Eternal Creations (my favorite. It's Christian but they don't proselytize)
Wonderful Denmark (Just wonderful)
Netherlands Zandbank (The Dutch sandbox...friendly)
New Berlin Sandbox.

You get a world tour in a sandbox.

If you aren't embarrassed to wear a box briefly, you can always Edit it on No Build land and drag the contents into inventory...I like to create a new folder first, just to keep things tidy.

1. Create > New Folder in Inventory;
2. Wear box;
3. Right-click > Edit box;
4. Choose Contents tab (if you don't see the tabs, click 'More' button on Edit window);
5. Left-click or Shift-left-click (for multiples) on item(s) in Contents tab;
6. Drag selected items to new folder in Inventory;
7. Detach box.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Sassy's top tip:

If the contents are COPY, then when in no rez land, wear the box, edit the box, open inventory and copy the items from the edit contents tab to inventory.

No dashing off to rez.

I sometimes attach it to my HUD so no one can see me wear it. You can attach it to Center2, right-click it and Copy to Inventory the same as if you put it on the ground. When finished, just detach it.

Sirena (hair) does that, and I love her for it.

When helping someone new to the game I have trouble finding any place where they can unbox items. It's frankly a bit frustrating. Even sandboxes often do not allow items to be rezzed so someone can open them. I understand that sometimes boxing or bagging a product is necessary for the vendor but any time it isn't, not having to go through that whole process is greatly appreciated.

As for being embarrassed when a box or poster rezzes on your head: Don't be. Still happens to me sometimes. Lol. Well, the boxed items usually retain the folder name the unpacked version does...and other times I just plain forget what is in Inventory.

Any tips anyone has, for finding places to open boxes? Places to tell newcomers to go to. (ETA: Writing down the ones above, but more for the list is always handy)
