Profile Picture Distortion

When I take an in world snapshot at 512x512 and then use it as my profile picture the picture is distorted because the profile picture dimensions are not a square. I know that there is a way to manipulate these snapshots so that they look good in the profile by using Photoshop or Paint Shop pro (which I use) to change them.

I know someone who does this but she would not tell me how citing "professional secrets". LOL

Can anyone tell me exactly what needs to be done to a 512x512 snapshot to make it look good as a profile pic?

That is such a great question. I changed my profile pic last night and was annoyed by the same thing. And my FL profile pic sucks too.

Because of the size and format restrictions imposed by the SL system, it is best to scale the longest dimension to one of the multiples (512, 256, 128) and keep the aspect ratio the same. When uploaded, these look distorted when viewed in textures, but just fine with no distortion when used in your actual profile.

Profile Pic: 168 x 126 (Use 512x384 or 256x192 for upload)
My Picks: 290 x 164 (Use 512x292 for upload)
1st Life Pic 135x135 (Use 256x256 or 128x128 for upload.)

Thanks to Torian Carter who measured up the dimensions and originally posted this information.

Thanks for the info. If I start with a picture that is 512x512 which is aspect ratio of 1:1, how do I scale the longest dimension while keeping the aspect ration the same?

If I change the dimensions doesnt it change the aspect ratio?

If you start with a square picture, you need to edit it in a program like Photoshop or GIMP (or even the little Paint program that comes with Windows probably works). Crop a little off the top and a little off the bottom.

Profile Pictures are 4x3 pictures in your picks are 16x9 and 1st life and Group Logos are 1x1

In photoshop i set the canvas size to something like 400x300 for my profile picture then manually drag the image around to get the framing as i want it before finally changing the image size to something like 256x256 (at which point it should look vertically stretched) an then uploading.
