I have heard this requested numerous times so I thought I would point out that it is now possible to hide your membership in any group that you select.

See the Torley tutorial here:

Mandatory question: Does anyone know if this hides your on-line status to other group members?

No it does not. You will be shown as online to anyone belonging to the group.

Now if only they could enable us to mute group chatter.

To mute group chatter, open the chat box and select the group tab, click the "tear off" button in the upper right (next to the "x";) and your group chat will be in a separate window. You can then click "x" to close and group chat.

This works on a session by session basis.

That's actually been there since mid-October last year :).

(Edited to add that it's subtly different from hiding an entire group as well. If the group isn't shown in search someone who isn't part of the group won't see it while someone who is in the group will. If you hide a group from your own profile even other members of the same group won't see it in your profile. If you want to see if someone is in a certain group, you have to look at the member list of that group, not at their profile)
