Hi all, I have been in Second LIfe for two years, but I'm still new to this forum. I have heard that all members are cooperative and very helpful. My friend is doing a research on Second Life. I wonder if anyone is willing to help fill in this survey. If possible, please put it inside a notecard and send to me in-world, (SL name: Tohru Kanami). The notecard's name should be "Tohru's survey - *your name here*". Or you can go to both of these links to fill out the survey using Survey monkey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=QyeJ2CKjwCUmRXYCmW_2braA_3d_3dhttp://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=n1_2fGXneNk_2bz5rph1us2aQA_3d_3dI'm sorry for forgetting about the confidentiality of the residents. The questions are from my friend, I'm only relaying it to you. ------------ Questions from 3 to 20 are on a scale of 5. Please answer: 1(strongly agree), 2 (fairly agree), 3 (neutral), 4 (fairly disagree) and 5 (strongly disagree) Note that some questions only require you to answer what you think, not what is generally true. E.g. question no. 7. I really appreciate your help! 1) What is the duration of your second life (main) account? 2) How frequent do you use the (main) account? 3) The avatars in second life are generally responsive to the requests of others. 4) Other avatars will help me if I have any requests or problems. 5) The information provided is constructive and useful. 6) Other avatars will help me to within the best of their ability 7) Others avatars would not knowingly provide me with false information Other avatars will help me and expect nothing in return 9) Other avatars try to be fair when dealing in business with me 10) Other avatars are concerned about what is important to me 11) Other avatars are willing to disclose RL information about themselves. 12) This personal information is true 13) I do not hesitate to divulge personal information about myself 14) I only divulge personal information about myself if I have known the avatar well enough 15) I feel that avatars are generally reliable 16) I have faith that avatars will keep their promises 17) I generally trust other avatars unless they give me a reason not to 1 I always source for information on an avatar before communicating with him more often 19) I believe that the vendors put up by sellers are true representations of what I’m purchasing. 20) I insist on seeing a demo of the product before I purchase it. Open Ended Questions: Which Geographic Area/ Country are you from in Real Life? Do you wish to share any good or bad experiences? (Optional) Thank you very much! Tohru Kanami

It is not your fault, or your friend's, but I'm sick of being a lab rat. Have your friend come inworld and ask.

If you consider avatars to be PEOPLE, which I prefer to, many of your questions will have answered themselves.

It is better to have the survey somewhere off these forums. I wouldn't want to post some of the more personal answers here. Were we to IM them to you or put them on a notecard in world?
I don't mind being a lab rat sometimes, but you've got to understand we must be the most studied small group of people in the history of sociology. And there's no cheese at the end of it.
However this one is marginally different from the rest.

From: Weston Graves Were we to IM them to you or put them on a notecard in world? ... or in a Forum Private Message (although the mailbox isn't that large)? Or... how? I mean, posting replies here would both confound the research results by exacerbating the experimenter demand characteristic, and make for a deadly boring thread.

I'd be more inclined to answer survey questions anonymously and if the person running the survey were the one asking, rather than a friend. Btw after 2 years in SL do you think most people are friendly and helpful?

I think it would be better practice for researchers to
1) Poll a wider cross-section of SL residents
2) Indicate the purpose their research will go to and the organisation they represent
3) Ask in person, not via a friend
4) Refer to their subjects as residents (or even people, thank you Brann) rather than avatars
5) Supply a simple, confidential and appropriate means of reply

Hey cool another survey! And someone bumped an older one! So we have two going at once today! Maybe we can ask our new Forums Czar for a "Residents Surveys" forum.

Okay, why has no one created a survey bot yet? Given all the surveys lately, it would seem to be a real opportunity...
And by the way, I meant a bot to answer surveys, not create them...

From: Jake Black I dont know what the actual answer is.. I just know LLs response was at best...flaccid. From: Solomon Devoix That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...
...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.

Survey

I'm sorry everyone, I have no experience in this. I tried IM and requesting help in-world, but only got a few results so far. I even tried buying a survey ATM, but the script somehow got messed up. I tried survey monkey also, but there is a limit to how many questions you can ask. I didn't want to trouble people in SL's forum, only because I have no other way. Sorry again.

a survey, oh goody...... a fantasy world gives fantasy answers. The forums cant be accessed by many people, so slanted answers.... surveys mean nothing in SL or the forums.

You probably posted it here because you didn't know where else, and heck, this is called Resident Answers.... I can see the confusion. You are simply asking questions, somewhat personal ones, but it's no worse than some other posts. I _personally_ am not too crazy about surveys, but thats just me. The only thing I can think of suggesting is to put your questions on a mod notecard, so that people can fill it out and send it back to you. As for how to reach the amount of people you will need, I'm not sure. Friends? Their friends? Maybe groups you belong to... Just remember that if you're asking total strangers to give up their time, the results will be skewed to those kinds of people (who enjoy surveys).

It's just that it sounds as if at this point we might have more experience with this kind of data gathering than your friend and we feel it might be more helpful for him or her if we give our ideas on how to run a survey than by answering the actual questions you posted.

Someone suggested a survey thread, maybe that's a good idea if the New Forum materializes. I ignore surveys, I find them annoying personally, and I just don't get the fascination over our SL habits unless you are trying to sell something, then i really am going to avoid you. I'm getting extremely exasperated at this data mining in RL, and the efforts to sell me all sorts of extras at the checkout.
I was in an outlet store the other day with about $200 worth of stuff and first they are trying to sell me all sorts of shoe care products and what not, then the data mining begins. Do you want to open an account? No. Join the Bonus Club? No. Can I have your email? NO. Phone Number? NO! Zip Code? NO! Can I have your name and address? I gave up. I asked if I was buying clothes or financing a car?
The clerk was apologetic. She said she understood, but the manager gets on them when they don't ask. I told her to tell the manager he just lost a sale, I walked out. Jeez, just take my money and let me go.

It's a hard survey to answer. I think 95% of people are being genuine as avatars with respect to RL and whatever else... ...but I also think there are about 5% that aren't genuine at all - and that is for reasons that can be as harmless as 'acting in a role' to as nefarious as 'stalking' or 'theft'. It's not an 'agree/disagree' sort of thing about a general behaviour. It's a "strongly agree" on both ends of the spectrum - there are plainly both types out there. Sometimes I feel like a walking survey - I've dealt with thousands and thousands of avatars and have incredibly exceeded my Dunbar's Number* - to the point of uncomfortability at times. So when I see surveys like this, I'd almost suggest talking to a few people who know a lot of others through the course of their SL lives, and they are going to give you more accurate estimations of what the grid is like than any survey ever could. We've been inadvertently researching for years, just by virtue of the fact of living here. For instance, you could survey a Polynesian village about culture or just walk up and ask an honest kid on the beach how things are - the kid will give you better answers. * Dunbar Number: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar's_number

Tohru Kanami Due to the tendency of people to "sugar-coat" their answers when in a public forum, any data gathered through this method will be tainted and unuable. I would strongly suggest against using any of this data.
