Hmm I read this in a note card at a place inworld, I have run SL on dialup before, it's not pretty but it does run, you can chat ok and eventually your surroundings rez at min settings. Any truth to this you think?
IF YOU ARE ON A DIAL UP CONNECTION, I'M SORRY, BUT YOU'LL NEED TO LEAVE AS THAT TOTALLY STALLS THE ISLAND SERVERS JUST HAVING 1 PERSON ON DIAL UP. SL IS REALLY MEANT TO BE RAN USING HIGH SPEED INTERNET.

That's a cute notion. I've also seen notecards claiming that you'll lag everyone else if you set your own bandwidth too high It all seems to be foggy speculation that got passed around as fact…

You'll need to leave? How do they know?
I can't imagine it would have any effect on anyone except the individual user, which must be a nightmare. You must have way more patience than me, Tegg.

*holds her head as she starts to hear the dial up sound* Dial up, you poor thing, and then to have people say you have to leave because of it. *shudders*

From: someone TOTALLY STALLS THE ISLAND SERVERS The only thing I can think of that might be affected would be "Pending Download" (or Uploads). On a healthy sim the number can fluctuate, but it should regularly return to 0 or everyone on the sim will experience problems with inventory (fetching), attachments won't attach, textures/notecards/animations/etc won't load, shape/clothes won't download if you log on, real chance of purchases not being delivered, etc. Even stuck at 1 the sim can exhibit all those problems. I don't know whether dial-up actually does cause (or would contribute) it though, but it's the closest to a reason why they might have it phrased it thay way I can come up with . (Edited to add that the sim wouldn't lag in the time dilation/physics sense though, or crash for that matter, although it usually does take a restart to get it all healthy again)

Like you don't feel bad enough already to be on dial-up?

I have heard this.
I have also read, Linden Sources sometime in the recesses of SL history that they admited dialup causes lag to others.
However I have also chatted with people on dial-up before,
And the sim seemed to be humming along just fine.
SO I don't know whats right.
If Dialup causes the crash the dialup person would probably crash first, right?

When I first started Second Life, I had dial up. I used it for months because there are few alternatives out here. I am no networking master, but I don't think I lagged anything while on dial up. The only person who crashed and lagged was me, lol. The worst part was waiting for everything to load; I often shopped on SLX. Your ISP connection and the Network tab's bandwidth throttle are personal and local. They control how much data is rendered by YOUR client; I don't think it stuffs more data through someone else's client. I found that keeping it at 1500 kb/s makes SL run faster for me with most settings maxed out. (I have high speed now by the way) I think the SL servers can handle someone on 56k which probably gives them like 6kb/s in world if I remember correctly.

is that why they shut the grid down just now? 10,000,000 people logged in with dialup?
