Hey everyone! Here's my problem, my mic is plugged in, my speakers are on, my voice chat is enabled, all the settings are default... but I can't hear anything or speak.

The tab shows up in the bottom right hand corner, and the voice users one is "Active" although I've never been able to see if someone is using voice or not. I can use my middle mouse button to click what would be my ability to talk... but it's not a lit up button.

I don't know what to do to fix it, and I find it highly frustrating. I've disabled, enabled, re-downloaded the program and still.. no such luck! I have a brand new computer which has never had a problem with any media... but I'm thinking maybe I clicked something and now there's a cookie stored somewhere I haven't looked yet, telling my computer not to make voice chat work for me.

If anyone has any insight it would be most welcome!

Thanks!

are you firewalled?
make sure it can get through if it is.
also voice has been havin issues as of late so it could be down again.
i'm not technical, so maybe someone more savvy can answer it.

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Try turning off your firewall completely (Windows and Nortons)--see if that works. If you're more savvy, you can custom add SLVOICE to your allow list...

Try dropping your Windows firewall to a medium security level.

Good luck.

Here's a few things to try. Toggle your talk button a few times (click the lock icon).

Do you see a white dot above your head and other people's? If you don't then voice is not activated. If you see green lines emmanating from another's white dot, then that person has a live mic.

Also open the active speakers list. Those who have live mics should have a green dot next to them. You will probably need to click each persons name and adjust their volumes individually.

Make sure you don't have your own mic on mute. I have a mute button on the cable of my headset. It's very easy to forget whether or not it's on.

Other audio software you may have running could interfere.

Don't give up. I had issues getting voice to work too. And suddenly it began working. I don't know what the magic was, because nothing I did was any different.

The other issue is can I ask what you are using for the headset.

Is it a headset that is digital in other words a usb one which is a lot better than the round plug in ones.

Hi Melanie, welcome to the forums!

If you see the white dot above your head and you also see the little green radiating lines when others speak, then it may be a volume issue.

I find that SL's voice is quieter than any other voice that I use (including other VoIP clients) ... presumably due to the effects of the "spatial" software. Every volume control on your computer affects SL voice - if you DO see the indicators above, then try cranking everything up to the max.

If you don't see the white dot and green lines, then voice is not configured correctly or, possibly, you're testing it on a parcel where it's not enabled. Have you tried it with a friend who definitely has it working?

If you don't have such a friend, let me know and we can meet at the forum cartel clubhouse and give it a try :)

EDIT: I didn't read your OP closely enough, it looks like configuration is indeed your issue. Here's a suggestion: how about you download Skype or use Yahoo voice (in their chat client) to be sure that your local mic/headphone setup is all OK. Both of them have simpler setup and better feedback as to how your stuff is working... Skype has a very nice "test call" feature that doesn't involve another person. Then try SL.
