I want to speed up my SL experience. To that effect, is it possible to switch off QuickTime? If so, what will be the consequences?

Thanks!

I don't believe you need quicktime unless you are watching movies in SL, do you? In any case, sometimes programs add a lot of unnecessary gunk to startup on your computer and you can certainly toggle off anything it added to launch at startup. Quicktime shouldn't be running all the time.

Though you can prolly get better results from increasing RAM (SL is a memory hog) or adjsuting prefernces.

Might help the techies if you list what your PC stats are and what major prefernces you use.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

The reason I hit on QuickTime is that when I start up the SL viewer, it seems to spend about five minutes "initializing QuickTime." It's not something that's running constantly on my computer. How do I set it up so that SL doesn't automatically initialize QuickTime?

You might make sure that under "Preferences: Audio & Video" that you have turned OFF the option to play streaming music & video, I am not sure if that is the option that is causing SL to try to start it at launch ...

I've never tried it but from Nicholaz's blog...

Use the startup option -noquicktime

I may be wrong, but Quicktime won't bog the system down if you're not playing video

You can use -noquicktime on startup to keep it from initializing quicktime, which will speed up the loading time for SL. However if you then actually try to play any video content, SL will crash on you.
