heyas;
so my cache is on my hard drive under the cache directory where i stuck it. and i presume all that weird junk in there is... my inventory stuff or whatever. so the question is, instead of:
1: logging in 2: going to prefs: network: clear cache 3: logging out 4: logging back in again
i could just go into this directory and
1: ctrl-a 2: delete
?
i ask, because some files in there are different than the others. i dunno, they might be some sort of index or... something? is it okay to delete those as well, or are there some housekeeper files that need to stay in there?
anybody know?

You can nuke the whole cache directory. It'll get rebuilt the next time you login.

I'm lazy. Once I get to my log in screen the first thing I do is go to preferrences>network>clear cache. Okay the dialog box and apply, close the preferrences. Then I log in as usual. That way the next time I launch SL (be it in 5 mins or a week) my cache is cleared before my next session. Do this each and every time I log in and I always have a cleared cache to start with.

how does one go about manually placing a cache, and where does one place it? what do you name it? i'd like to be able to clear my cache manually as well.

There's a button in the Network tab of the preferences dialog that lets you pick out the folder you want to use for a cache.
To make the folder use your operating system to make a folder. Then fire up SL, go to preferences / network, and use the button to find the folder you made.
============
There's an argument you can add to your SL shortcut's target field at the very end of the line to make SL clear the cache each time it starts: -purge.

and, will my SL viewer have to rememorize all the textures that lay before me everytime i empty out this folder? so, i will experience 'first-time' rezzing after this?

Yes, you'll have lots of grey and blurry textures for a while until everything downloads. The upside will be vastly improved performance and, if you defrag your HD after clearing your cache alot less disk thrashing.
The default location for your cache is:
c:\documents and settings\username\application data\secondlife\cache
once you're in that directory hit ctl+a and then delete. it'll take a while. once that's done be sure to empty your trash / recycler / whatchamacallit and then run defrag / speeddisk / diskeeper.
I would recommend clearing your cache & defragging daily if you intend to spend more than an hour a day in SL. If you work in SL as a builder / texturer or anything above 4 hours per day, I would recommend cache clearing twice daily as a minimum unless you really, really enjoy that feet-glued-to-the-floor feeling.
