Do you use Twitter for SL?

In the past few days, I've gotten several invitations to Twitter. Some from SL friends, and some from RL friends.

If you use Twitter, what do you use it for?

Do you find it just one more thing thing have to keep up with (likes blogs, email, IMs, etc?) In other words, is it just one more time-sucker? Or is it useful? What can it do that you can't do through email, Google Chat, etc?

Regarding the SL vs RL thing. When you sign up for your account, which name do you use for your user name? Or do you try to maintain 2 separate accounts, to protect privacy between SL and RL?

Do you like it? Is it useful enough to warrant spending time on it? Or is it too invasive? Does it help you with your SL, or is it better for RL?

Sorry for so many questions. I don't know much about it, and their website really doesn't give out much info or examples.

Thanks,
Princess Ivory

I had never heard of Twitter until now, however my gaming friends and I do use what appears to be a similar service.

It's fun and adds to our experience because we can share blogs, pictures, updates etc. even when we cannot be in game.

However, we all kind of joined it together, so I don't know if I would find it as enjoyable if it was just a random group of strangers... ?

As for posting RL info on the internet, including my name, no, no, never!!! Better safe than sorry.

I use Twitter constantly. I have it on when I am working inside and outside of SL. In fact I made a free, open HUD that lets one post to and receive messages from Twitter, as well as post SLURLs (and pictures if you set it up correctly and have a Flickr, Snapzilla etc account) - http://ordinalmalaprop.com/twitter/

In experience it is a bit between an IRC or group IM session, and reading RSS feeds. Depending a lot on how many friends one has on one's list and who they are. I have hundreds and thus my list is quite busy; people do have conversations with each other and it is useful for keeping up with the latest news. Some people only tweet occasionally, about what they are doing, and don't use it for conversation, and that is fine as well.

I've read people's Twitters before and it's amazingly boring. Unless they have something like "chased by lion...write more later" then I'm going to stop reading. But seriously it's like a blog only shorter...much shorter. I can see why someone would write things on twitter but reading other people's.... ugh.

Thanks, you have all confirmed my gut feeling about it. I am waiting to get a copy of an article from a friend that was in School Library Journal about some innovative ways it is being used in the library world. I'll post here if there is anything of interest in the article.

Twitter keeps things short and sweet.
