Hi Guys,

I have had a look to see if this is posted anywhere else on the forum, but without luck :(

I want to set up a group, but i'm not 100% sure how to do it and don't want to do it wrong, so if anyone could give me a step by step guide, i'd really appreciate it.

It is probably really easy, but like i say i don't want to mess it up.

Thanks

Most important: You have to have at least two stable members, including yourself. The safest way to do that is yourself and an alt.

Other than that, it depends on what the group is used for as to how you set it up.

Right-click on yourself--select Group, then create. You can then fill in all the necessary or non-necessary information.

You will also have to pay L$100 for the creation of the group.

But how do you get up the title and tags etc... i had a quick go but gave up or maybe SL was playing up at the time, so it wouldn't work.

It's under members and roles. From there:

OK. Let's see...

Be careful in group name selection. You can't change the name later, except by starting all over again and creating a new group.

I usually set up my groups so only the group owner has the "Pay Liabilities" role ability checked. That ensures two things: First, if you have group-owned land, any parcel-based 'places' ads only get charged to you, instead of split to the group. Second, any profits paid from sale of group land or paid to group-owned objects go to you.

If your group plans on using a group-owned object to receive funds and split profits, such as a shared tip jar, perhaps, then you might want the "pay Liabilities" option checked for all your group officers.

I normally uncheck virtually all abilities from the "Everyone" role, and define other abilities in other roles as required. That way I can add people as 'guests', in the Everyone role, without instantly giving them more rights than I intended.

If the group will own land, then make sure the group membership and roles are set and ready to go, with at least your two stable members, before deeding any land to the group. People lose land a lot by creating a one-person group, deeding land to that group, and failing to add another group member in time. When the group expires for lack of two or more members, they lose the land and the group.

You're pretty much asking us to move your eyeballs and fingers for you. Tell you that a create button exists, tell you where exactly to type in the title. The rest are decisions that you have to make yourself, and you haven't posed anything specific. I normally don't do this, but it is fairly intuitive if you would actually read what is in front of you and process it.

No, i obviously know that you click create and where you add the title etc, but i wanted to know the other stuff like how you add members and create the tags. And like i said in an earlier post, maybe SL was playing up when i tried as it seemed to be not playing ball.

There are also a lot of undocumented assumptions and configuration issues relating to groups that simply are NOT obvious when you just read through the settings and documentation.

For example, the "Pay Liabilities" role permission is checked by default for the "Everyone" role. The apparent LL assumption was that group-owned land and assets would normally be equally shared, with everyone equally contributing land to the group, and so money paid to group items or paid for group land that got sold should be split evenly between group members. But that isn't at all what you want if you're setting up a group for access to a parcel or a club, and 99% of the group members are just guests, and not people who contributed funds or land to build the group assets.

It's also not at all obvious that if you want group members to be able to set their home location on group land, the land itself has to be *deeded* to the group, and not just set to group. In fact, a lot of the group roles that are land-related simply do not work unless the land is deeded.
