Since I'm somewhat new despite the age of my avatar (having created the account in 2006 for the Poser 7 launch, and then gone back to Poser and forgotten I'd made it...), I joined NCI's group.
I like having the group on my list, and now and again I want to listen in, but its a 24/7 spam house of IM's, and its reached the point where I can't even carry on normal conversations with people around me.
I tried disabling group notices, no effect. Do I just have to leave the group and only use NCI when I myself specifically want to TP over there and do something? Or is there some way to turn off a group's IM channel?

You could try the Cool Viewer, a popular third party viewer produced by Henri Beachamp and made available for Windows by Boy Lane. Cool Viewer will let you remove the group chat from the scrolling console chat.
In the regular viewer, you can make the local proximity chat appear in a dialog box by itself without any group or other IMs mixed in.

Other than Suzanne's suggestion of disabling "Show IM's in Local Chat and Console" (Edit -> Preferences -> Communications), there is no way to really silence a group's IM's without leaving the group. If someone does happen to find a way to do this, that person will be loved by me and the community at large forever!

When you get a group IM, if you close that group's tab in Communicate window, you won't get any more from them until you log out. To turn it back on, select the group and open the tab manually.
Sometimes another message or two gets through before it shuts up, due to bugs in the Viewer. But it's supposed to be: close the tab == stfu for that Group.

"I can't believe I'm over 2 years old and never noticed that" moments. Well I'll try not to feel so bad.... A friend of mine who is over 2 years old just learned yesterday that it's possible to open two (or more) inventory windows at once.

If someone does happen to find a way to do this, that person will be loved by me and the community at large forever! Not in the official viewer. Nicholaz' viewer has had it for a long time in the debug settings: _Nicholaz.Chat_IgnoreIMFromGroups IM-Filter for group names. Use * to filter all, enter keywords like Fashion;Build;Talk to filter on group name match. Leave empty to receive all. I wouldn't know what to do without it :) Possibly other third-party viewers offer something like this too?

Did you mention you can then grab the edge of the detached group IM tab and slide almost all the way off the edge of the viewer, leaving enough border to be able to grab it and pull it back later? That way you still have the IM history if you want to catch up, but it's not distracting you from building or being an extra wrong window to inadvertently emote to your loved one in. I thought you guys were headed that way, but I didn't actually see it mentioned unless I missed it.

There is a JIRA suggestion for this: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-2820To vote for it, first login to JIRA then vote for the issue on the left menu bar.
