Connecting to SL with a 3G CDMA card for your laptop...

Okay, I asked this in the forum cartell, but I thought I would reask on the forums as well, just in case someone who gets on here can help me.

So here's the issue.

I recently purchased a 3G CDMA card for my laptop from Cricket Wireless. What this basically is, is a card that allows me to connect to the internet anywhere. It's basically a USB modem, but I don't think it connects the same as DSL or cable, though I've found it's just as fast.

Now, I've heard you can connect to Second Life with a 3G CDMA, but I am unable to do so. I get a message that says "DNS Server could not resolve the host name."

So I was wondering, does anyone else use a G3 modem to connect to SL? If so, any advice on how to do so? It's okay if there's no way, I have other ways to get on, but I'd like to be able to use this as well, even if it sucks.

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

What are the network settings for your connection? Are you using a proxy server? VERY loosely speaking, what the error message is telling you is that (an analogy here) the "phone company" doesn't have a listing for that "name."

It could be that your provider is filtering out Second Life.

I attempted to find out if it is a proxy server or not - I just don't know to be honest. I did find this on their site;

Cricket Broadband
How does the Cricket Wireless Broadband Modem work?

The Cricket Wireless Broadband Modem allows you to establish an internet connection using a laptop computer while on the Cricket wireless network. The wireless modem connects to Cricket's network much like your cellular phone.

Now, if they are filtering SL, can they unfilter it? Is that something that they cannot change because it's set to affect everything that connects with cricket wireless? Why would they block SL? Sigh... lol. -.-

I use a 3G Modem from Verizon to connect to Second Life on my laptop.

Unfortunately, the packet loss is so horrible its not good for much other than sending IMs & passing inventory, if I can get that to work at all.

It does sound like your provider is blocking the ports Second Life communicates on, however.

Yeah, that's what we figured out, actually, that Cricket is blocking. I am going to try and call and see if they will unblock it, I am not sure if they will, and if they do, like you said, it may not be worth it if the thing can't run SL so great. This sucks, I just got a new computer that runs SL like a dream, but with a crap net connection off this thing, I guess I will have to use other methods to get on. Thanks!

I've used a 3G Blackberry to connect, via Verizon. 600+kbps, no packet loss. However, it did require me to download a little applet to the PC I use for SL ... before you beat up Cricket, find out if they have a little applet that will solve your problem.

I've previously connected to SL over 3g, using my N95 as a modem, on the UK T-Mobile network, with no problems.

That DNS problem sounds like it would be system-wide, rather than just SL failing to work. Can you do other net stuff (web browsing, etc.) over the connection successfully?
