You may mean linking.
Control + Right Click to select prims.
Control + L to link.
Control + Shift + L to unlink.
Or, if you forget the hotkeys, go to the Tools menu to find Link and Unlink.

You can select multiple objects without linking them then move them around.

If you don't actually want to link all of the items together - or if there are too many to link: 1) hold down the 'ctrl' key to select them all and then you can move them as a group 2) draw a box around the whole batch, while the edit box is open, and they will all get selected. If there are items in the area that are not yours, click the 'select only my items' option under the Tools menu (I think that is the menu it is under).

We might be deviants, but we are also quite often useful - or at least have some useful knowledge.

A couple more pointers:
Groups of items are limited by distance and number.
You can't actually link more than 255 prims into a group and have it stay linked together. You can select more than that at once and move them without linking, but any given linkset can't be more than 255 prims.
Linking distance is based on a complex formula having to do with the size of the objects and the distance between centers, and an imaginary sphere that completely encloses the bounding box of each object. But in simple examples, you could link 4 prims that are 10 M x 10 m in size, in a straight line, but a 5th one is too far apart. But smaller prims have to be closer to the nearest neighbor in the linkset than big ones do. While in the previous example with large prims, the centers were 10 M apart, a pair of 0.5 meters spheres would have to be no more than 2.5 M apart of so to link to each other.
Another point is that linking is NOT hierarchical: If you have one linkset that is a chair, and one that is a table, and one that is the upper story of your house, and you link those to each other, there is no way to back that out and make it a separate chair, table and house section. You'd have to unlink the whole thing, and then select and re-link just the parts for the chair, for example, to restore the chair. So be careful about actually linking dissimilar objects.

If the bottom of the objects are all at the same height and you are unable to group them together, isn't it possible to set *Z* (I hope Z is the height, I don't use it much) at the height you want them to be. Someone help me here, I am blonde and just guessing. I have heard that people raise whole houses that way, but I have never given it a try.

And before it is forgotten, there are entire forums dedicated to content creation: building tips, texturing tips, scripting tips, etc. At the very least, check out building tips.
