You can click one name in your friends list, then ctrl-click the others, then finally the IM button.

(ETA: but ouch i was just noticing some bugs with that. It seems to crash the latest Nicholaz hard. On the RC, the IM button doesn't highlight, but it will still work if you keep the ctrl key held down and double-click the last name picked)

if they are not on your friends list but you do have their calling card, create a folder and put their calling cards in the folder then right click the folder and choose start conference chat
(this is about the only use I have found for calling cards)

I'm not sure that crashing is limited to the Nicholaz client. See:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5041

Note that the issue has an internal issue ID, but no one is assigned.

If you can reproduce the crash, I'm sure Nick would at least welcome knowing about it.
