Several months ago I posted a request in this forum asking that people who were willing to take a survey I am conducting for my doctoral dissertation on gender swapping do so. After the usual protests, people began to begrudgingly post their thoughts to the effect that the survey was "not that bad." Given the reception people making similar requests have received over the past few years, I took this to be high praise. I got about 85 completed surveys over the course of 4 days, which was a good response. Then the thread died. I am reposting my request because I need a few more responses. The link to the survey is here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=QOfIzb0_2fIBcgaQpCuTmcfA_3d_3d Apologies to the people I know I will frustrate with this request and many thanks to the people who do take the time to complete the survey. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the survey, or would like the results of the survey once I collect the data, please feel free to email me here on at kgrosman@wi.edu.

I don't remember this the first time around, but I will definitely give you points for an Intro page that provides a lot of info to give credibility to this survey -- unlike so many requests we get.
Due to the anticipated time needed, I'll have to wait until after work to actually do the survey, which I will do simply because of the professional manner in which it is presented. .

Tarina Sewell admits she had to look that up.... I was too lazy to look it up and based on the other questions took it to mean "both sexes or neither sex". I was close.

Well if all these worthies took the survey, how can I snub it?
A few questions assumed we all have one avatar and that's something academia is going to have to overcome. But there is plenty of opportunity to explain and not just the usual restricting yes or no questions.
Congratulations on having the first survey thread (in my time anyway) that hasn't collected several pages of verbal incineration.

From: Weston Graves Congratulations on having the first survey thread (in my time anyway) that hasn't collected several pages of verbal incineration. This establishes a dangerous precedent. Our collective reputation could be ruined by one survey, done well, that got a relatively welcoming treatment. This could lead future survey-takers to construct better surveys... and do better science... and then where will we be? A couple of caveats for the OP: We Forums folk aren't very representative of SL, I suspect, because we've been exposed to this topic many times, so our reactions are likely to be less immediate and more "reasoned" just because we've thought about this topic more and heard more diverse opinions about it. Also, while I was entering responses in free text areas, I felt myself almost compelled by experimenter demand characteristics: I was very much telling you what I thought you wanted to hear. That's always a problem, and I have no idea what might make it a more or less powerful contaminant in one or another survey, but I just don't recall ever before being so conscious of its effect on my own responses. (Might be just the subject itself?)

From: Weston Graves Congratulations on having the first survey thread (in my time anyway) that hasn't collected several pages of verbal incineration. there were several pages of worth of heat (but no fire) when this one came up first time around... there were a few suggested tweaks, but you are right, this particular survey set a standard, that if others lived up to, could reduce the flames considerably (which I guess Qie said better) and here's a fun note, the entire process of submitting surveys here has pointed out most of the general ethical and technical fallacies inherent in the policies and systems (or lack thereof) behind them, and would actually be a good way to mine both types of improvements for future revision (so take note you survey makers)

Taken (again!). An improvement on the original, although it wasn't all that bad the first time round. As a lot of people have said already, the first version was seen in a generally positive light. From: Qie Niangao ...Also, while I was entering responses in free text areas, I felt myself almost compelled by experimenter demand characteristics: I was very much telling you what I thought you wanted to hear. That's always a problem, and I have no idea what might make it a more or less powerful contaminant in one or another survey, but I just don't recall ever before being so conscious of its effect on my own responses. (Might be just the subject itself?) I didn't *think* I was doing that at that the time, but I'm aware it can be a strong effect. Maybe it's just that my personal situation means I'm more likely to give those kind of answers? Which is another kind of contamination in itself: post a survey on gender-swapping, and the gender-swappers are likely to dive in and answer.

From: Pserendipity Daniels Didn't do it before . . .
Pep ( . . . won't do it this time.) "'Gender Swapping Is a Foul'" Rugby Player Daniels Claims." Last night, at Fox and Hounds Pep "The Grammar" Daniels claimed, "Swansea Are 'Butch' and Northampton Town are 'BEST'. To a stunned Northants drinking set, Daniels went on to claim, "I don't know about you but I reckon I know a REAL team when I see one." "The Saints are the ones." Well into his cups, Daniels went on to say he supported Northampton football club and the County cricketers, saying "If only Wales had teams like these, I would have stayed there." Daniels is best known as a hooker for Cambridge OddFellows Rugger and is known as "That Gerund of Welsh Borders".
