Don't take it too personally - we premium members can only submit tickets through the support portal when it's working properly, which it is not right now, at least for me. And even then it's a crapshoot on getting a response that will solve the problem. I've been fairly lucky in the past, but some others have not, and my luck might be about to run out.

Dear Second Life(tm) Resident,

We at Linden Labs(tm) know something about Internet Etiquette, so we do know the capitals in your most valued Resident Question do translate into shouting. We very kindly inform you that our interface to the Second Life (tm) Forums does not yet have a sound interface, so you might just as well keep a normal level of speach. Not only that would be more polite, but also less irritating.

Even though you are no premium, we do care enough to try and answer your Resident Question(tm), which was: "what the f".

Premium users are the users who pay tier and premium membership to the Linden Labs Company. That does entitle them to a certain level or support.

Basic users are users that do not pay tier and premium membership to the Linden Labs Company. That gives them only a very basic level of support. But still more then they pay for we would say.

We provide basic users with a inteface just as unstable as we provide our premium users with. We provide basic users with a Metaverse(tm) which is just as much accessible to them as to our premium users. We provide our basic users even with the possibility to make traffic bots, so they can compete with other businesses. And we do that all for free. Yes, for free.

The above is an explanation on the support levels, but doesnt answer your Resident Question though.
We at Linden Labs(tm) do not exactly know the answer to your Resident Question though. You can always visit us on office hours to explain your question "what the f...", so we can come up with a reasonable answer. With the current information, we can only take a wild guess:

42

Kind regards,

On behalf of the Linden Labs Team,

Marcel Flatley

They listen, they hear, they ignore.

That's not true, of course. They just do things the wrong way - in a very non-businesslike way. Their company policy, for instance, is to allow the employees to work on projects that appeal to them, rather than on projects that are needed. I mentioned another system in a thread earlier - Entropia Universe - and suggested that it's an odd name, being as 'entropy' mean 'disorder'. That name applies perfectly to LL and SL.

I heard a long time ago, from someone who works in SL for IBM and who knows the hardware very well, that LL tries to get as much as possible out of as little as possible - doing it as cheaply as possible. That's the cause of many of the perpetual problems that we've experienced for quite a few weeks now, such as borked logins, failed transactions, etc. etc.. They use too little hardware to cope with demand. The demand was foreseen, as concurency continued to rise, but they failed to prepare for it, presumably because it would have cost a significant amount of money. I imagine that they decided to deal with it if and when when problems occured.

The sooner they get a new CEO, the sooner SL will become a reasonably stable platform, for all the purposes that people and companies want to use it for. The current top management is useless.

Marcel, though I agree with LL providing different levels of support to Premium and Basic accounts, permit me to correct you here.

Any resident who is paying rent to an estate owner is paying tier, since that estate owner would not own the land they pay LL for if they could not rent it to the hordes of payment-info-on-file Basic accounts. And in fact, you do not have to be a Premium account to buy an island - only to buy on mainland.

4/5 of SL's land mass is islands. I wish I knew what percentage of that land is rented, but I'm sure we both agree the percentage is high! PIOF Basic accounts are the backbone of SL's economy.

permit me to correct YOU here. only land owners pay teir end of line! they pay it no matter what they do with the land. if you subsiquently rent from them you may be off setting there payments but in no way are you the renter paying teir, just like in rl renters are not part of the tax equation. those taxes and teir are owed whether you or anybody else is renting or not

Kiboe,
Does anyone really expect live support for shareware?

And the paying customers no not need to be precise. The less vague you can be the better but as long as you get the point across it's OK. You can be a little off on the details but the more precise you are the easier it is to resolve your issue.

.

You were already corrected by Mjolnir, but let me specify how things work in my opinion.

As soon as you are renting from an Estate owner, you are their customer. So if you need support, you go there.

Of course, there is more then just land involved. That is why you can get some basic support, but not much. Then again, you get the access for free. No one knows wether you rent land or not. Many residents don't even have land.

Myself, I rent a nice plot on Estate land. AND I am premium. So I do pay Linden Labs for a service, and can get support. And the 2 tickets I have filed, were handled very well.

And let's face it: They charge you about 72 dollar a year. Of which about 58 dollar comes back to you in the form of weekly stipends. So what are we actually talking about? In my (maybe not popular) opinion, if people do not want to pay a yearly membership of 14 (!!) dollar, they should not complain about support.

Greetings, Marcel

I have never had a problem with the support portal, as a matter of fact the 3 times I have used it they were very quick to respond.. Detailed explination of what I can do to fix a situation, and then of course.. the pass the buck entry...

Most of the time, I believe you can get help faster here...in the forums. But some things, you just gotta contact them Lindens.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

*nods* Things like: "LL double billed me," "My sim is offline completely and has been for more than an hour," and "Why was I banned from SL?!" are questions we just can't do more than offer sympathy (well, except maybe the last one) and tell them to contact Support.

Another good use for the forum when contacting Support: When you've got a problem with the account, Support's trying to help and both of you want to know if others are suffering it too. My husband's account was on the blink.. couldn't change clothing, couldn't teleport, couldn't access the inventory (all empty folders) and any change to the inventory, such as purchasing items would vanish on relogging.. The rinse and repeat didn't work. So, I contacted support (Back when Live Help existed) and got one amazing Linden and then hopped over here to see if anyone else was suffering it too. There was, and I was able to pass on names of others affected. It was great!
