Some may remember the "Iraqi War Memorial" that I built in Epimetheus and eventually moved to Ganymede. It has been a long while, but NWN had a nice write-up at : http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2004/05/living_memorial.htmlI had a build that displayed the names and photos of all the fine men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice over there. For a lot of reasons, I left SL and my good friend Lecktor Hannibal took over the maintenance of the site. But Leck has moved on and the memorial is no more. I have recently bought some mainland land, and would like to put the Iraqi War Memorial back on the Second Life map, but I need some help. When I last worked on the memorial, there were around 900 casualties in the database. There are now over 4000 men and women who need to be honored, and I could use some help updating the database. Specifically, I need people to help me finding the photos that are displayed alongside the names and hometowns. If anyone is interested in helping with this project, IM me in-world, and I'll send you a notecard with info as to how to help.

... I would love to have the site up and updated by Memorial Day, so we have about 7 weeks to pull this together.

Thanks... that is one of the sites I use to grab photos. There is a bit more involved than that, though. Each pic needs to be tied to a database entry, and the prim that I use to display the pics also needs to know the dimensions of each pic so that it can be displayed without distorting the aspect ratio. - Ace

- Ace Okay. I'll see if there's anything like that I can find. Best of luck. Mari

Also, the memorial honors all coalition soldiers, and not just Americans.

i think the figure is closer to 100,000, and rising. From: Ace Cassidy When I last worked on the memorial, there were around 900 casualties in the database. Will there be a memorial for all the Iraqi civilians killed as a result of the "Coalition of the Killing's" actions in Iraq? Or do they no longer matter?

Hi Alazarin,
I can't talk for the OP but I think he is talking about a War Memorial purely for US losses.
Oops..Just read the thread again and saw that he wants to recognise all coalition losses.
There's obviously nothing wrong with that, but possibly the title of the thread and the memorial itself should really be more specific.
In general though I understand and empathise with your point.

I agree, maybe someone should start a new project memorializing the hundreds of thousands of innocent people killed as a result of Sadaam Hussein's defiance of the international community and 10 years of flagrant UN resolution violations, which is what brought this nightmare to the people of Iraq.

From: Dekka Raymaker how about letting the guy just do what he wants to do, if you have other ideas, do it! I think we are Dekka, but obviously calling anything "The Iraqi War Memorial" implies that it's a memorial for all those affected by the conflict not just the coalition forces. So one suggestion that comes out of this is a change of name or scope. Obviously he doesn't need to take on board the suggestion, but if he doesn't then people will have a right to voice their misgivings. To be honest, specifically calling it "The Iraqi War Memorial" actually implies that it is in honour of the "Iraqi" people who have died in the conflict.

i remember visiting the memorial once. to be honest, it did include iraqi civilians. i think i even thanked him for that on an old thread. i suppose it was that paragraph i quoted that annoyed me. makes me wonder if the inclusion of civilians was merely a PC afterthought.

The one thing that has always bothered me about the Iraqi War Memorial is that it always seems to fail at the one thing that I was trying to accomplish... a simple honoring of those that have died over there.
The Memorial has never been a pro-war or anti-war statement. In fact, I have gone out of my way to keep it apolitical.
And the Memorial I had in Ganymede *DID* have a build that was meant to memorialize all of the civilian casualties. I never thought of it as a PC afterthought, but I suppose there are those that might think so.
Anyway... unless there are more people who want to answer my original call for help in updating the database with photos of these brave men and women, I don't think I can get this project moving ahead.

I can offer to you, the same as I did for the SLWall honouring those soldiers that lost their lives in the Vietnam war ( http://www.wba-advertising.com/thewall/thewall.html), a movie of any SL build/sim/area, to have on a website (we will, film, host and stream free of charge) for those that cannot get into SL.
