I've seen a lot of pictures in these forums. There are some great ones of horses in a recent thread. But at the bottom of my screen it clearly says "You may not post attachments."

I do see in this WYSIWYG editor I just activated (which answers my unasked question about where the icons embedded in the text come from) there is a tool bar for entering the URL of a picture. Does this mean you have to reveal personal information to post a picture? Not sure I'm comfortable with that idea.

Are people getting some kind of anonymous web storage space for this sort of thing? My web storage space would be mighty close to my RL web page.

They're not attachments. Just links to URLs that contain images.

We're linking them from other hosting sites, using bracketed IMG /IMG tags.

I've been using flickr.com to hold my SL pictures.
Free, and it gives a layer of anonymity.

As above, just put IMG tags around the URL of the picture.

You can add attachments at SLUniverse. You can also type Linden Lab™ without adding a ™ at the end.

Ray your back! It just wasn't the same without hearing the scurrying of your little feet. Some were tempted to post a where's Ray thread.

To answer the OP's question, I use flickr too. If you have a personal account with Flickr, then you can create a second one for anonymity.

Thanks for the answers. I wasn't exactly sure how it's done.

But aren't you worried about the URL showing up if images are turned off, if it's your own web storage space? My web storage space would have RL info associtated with it.

Maybe I'm being way too paranoid. It wouldn't be a huge tragedy if someone learned my true identity. It's just that I'm already that person in real life.

[Edit: Oops. Chat-lag. There were other posts that addressed these questions as I was typing them. Thanks all!]

And a quite handsome one too, from the spycam images I'm capturing in your office right now.

My Flickr account is set up under Ann Launay, not my RL info.

It's very easy to follow the URL to the host site. As I said in my post above they wont find much on me. My flickr account is under the name Bradley Bracken rather than my real name which is ...... uh...... something else.

No need to esplain, I saw your post about RL stuff taking priority. Been there, tiered down that.

Sites like Photobucket, Flickr and Imageshack, among others, offer free space to store images.

Flickr in particular has a slick workflow. The free accounts are limited in the number of categories pictures can be put in, and screenshots are given second class citizen status. Neither of those flaws may matter to most folks , in which case Flickr is pretty neat. Flickr lets you have long file names, longer than Photobucket, so when you take your shot you can give it a sensible name and when you save it to Flicker it will retain that name unmutilated, unlike Photobucket. Flickr has good batch processing functions - if you want to take a hundred snapshots, then uplocad them in a batch, Flickr will do that, and it will let you pick out the files and then gives you a chance to add descriptions in a convenient way. Flickr I believe has an editor that will let you crop and do some basic enhancement.

Photobucket's free accounts can have tons of categories , one way in which Photobucket is better than Flickr.

ImageShack is good too. Imageshack has standalone uploaders and Firefox extensions and other nice features.

There are others. All of these popular free image storage sites are pretty easy to use.

Snapzilla is a great place to put Second Life snapshots. You just send the snapshots from the SL program to pics@ slpics.com. Snapzilla stores the pics and lets' folks comment on them. When you put your SL pictures at Snapzilla they are joining what has to be the best most complete record of SL history you can find anywhere, I'm pretty sure of that.

Snapzilla can also forward your snapshots to Flickr.

Photobucket.com, flickr.com, imageshack.us, are the mainstreams sites, and for SL oriented Snapzilla you go to slpics.com or go to SLUniverse.com and while you're there at sluniverse.com , might as well check out the forums and other nice features Cristiano Midnight makes available.

I just set up a Flikr account. I had no idea it was that easy, and it's under my name. I mean it's under my avatar's name -- which is me, but . . Which one of us is talking here? I get so confused.

Thanks again.

Now you tell me. All those real life pictures on my Flickr page, plus the SL pictures. When will I learn?

I just came across a new-to-me limitation of free Flickr.

There is a "200 most recent pictures" limit on the free accounts.

This puts free Flickr pretty much in the crippleware category.

Flickr has long had a "second class citizen" status for screenshots. Screenshots honestly labeled as screenshots aren't don't show up in search. I don't know the specifics of that - whether it stops Google from returning them or just an Flickr site search or what precisely.

Free Flickr also has limits on the number of "sets" you can use, and the number of pictures or the filesize you can upload in a month or various other limitations.

This new-to-me limit of only the most recent 200 pictures is a definite push to either pay for Flickr or switch to a competitor.

If you have Wordpress.com blog, that site allows for sending and storing pictures there, and they are findable by the title of the blog post and the contents of the blog post.

Photobucket has a good free service.

Flickr's nice and it's not real expensive - it's 25 bucks a year for a pro account. Cheap, but still, free is cheaper than cheap.

Photobucket of course has limitations. The aspect of free Photobucket (and probably paid Photobucket as well) that bugs me most is that it doesn't let you use long expressive filenames. It removes spaces and chops the names off. The very best time and palce for me to provide info about a picture is in the filename.

Free Photobucket might well have serious limitations that I am completely unaware of which would make me consider it as undesirable.

I've been sending some pictures straight to Flickr without having a copy on my hard drive. That is an error for sure.

Well, the lazy approach for me would be to pay for Flickr pro. I think if you are going to pay for a service then Flickr may be a bit better than Photobucket. Flickr's batch processing system is pretty slick.

There may be more limits placed on free Flickr accounts in the future.

Flickr has a filter system in place. Go to Flickr, click on your name at the top of the screen. You will find a "Personal Information" page. Click on "Privacy & Permissions" - Go to the bottom one - "Content and Filters". If you want to include "Include art, illustration, CGI and other non-photographic images in search results", and "Include screenshots in search results" , check the box next to the name. This is also the place to turn on or off SafeSearch.

I have never had a problem finding screenshots on Google. Looking at the 3,430,000 results, I do not see anything from Flickr, though. 1 Photobucket on page 9, though I wasn't really looking for photobucket. In the 20 pages I looked at, I did not see a picture from Flickr by searching for "Second Life" using the Images tab, and 1 from Photobucket.

Using Flickr Stats (need a pro account to see your own stats), I do have pictures that people found through using search engines that are Flickr screenshots.

Started using Picasa recently. The tight integration with my Gmail account and my blogspot blog is pretty handy. Storage limit currently is just over a gig. Free, no ads and popups (don't get me started on Imageshack). Use Pbase for my RL work - $23 US per year for 500 MB and unlimited traffic.
