Traffic count, and why is mine high when I have no vistors?

Hi :)

I have a home on the mainland, a couple of the adjacent blocks are for sale. I've noticed my traffic count going up a lot, and I'm curious about this (I've also noticed that one of the for sale blocks, in particular, has a really high traffic count also). I installed a good security orb to keep track of traffic and there really is none (myself, and 2 avatars I know)...yet, I logged off for about 7-8 hours and my traffic count has gone to 400+. I've tested the security orb several times and have come to the conclusion that it's functioning correctly.

While it is a home site, I'm not actually bothered by people crossing over my land or by the traffic count...what is bothering me is: if someone can bump my traffic without anyone actually coming onto my land, well, I kinda wonder what else can they do.

What would a high traffic count, without any traffic, be caused by?

If you were on your land for 7-8 hours, the traffic was generated by you.
- One traffic point for each minute you were on the parcel.
400-ish woould be right for what you say.

If the rtraffic was generated by other avatars, they might have been on the parcel but outside the scan range of the orb.

Various bots that hang in the air/water for hours generally do so on Linden land, but one might have ended up over your place.

Add: Whatever avatars contribute to the account, there will be a time-lapse between the period they were on the parcel and the traffic score getting updated - about a day-ish.

This is made by the good traffic ghost. He visits all residents which accounts are in good standing, which are polite and nice and which are well dressed, showered, wearing a decent make-up and which are believing in the TAO and praying on their knees 3 times a day to the ToS and praising the Governor.

Then comes the good traffic ghost and donates giant amounts of free traffic to these fine people.

Congratulations!

:D

Lol, and they say there's no such thing as ghosts. :P

Eek, well if the traffic count goes up by a 1 a minute (as opposed to actual visitors)...then that might be possible...*g*

Thanks :-)

Is this land group-owned? Traffic will never be generated by the land's owner, only the presence of other avatars. But if you have deeded it to a group, your avatar is not that group, and therefore you will generate traffic (I have personally verified this to be factual). So you could be generating the traffic on your own just by being there.

Maybe you're getting visited by those people that have "secret gatherings."

Yes, actually...it is group owned. So, thanks...I probably am generating traffic.

I did actually notice a landmachine-kungfu-something-bot turning up to one of the neighbours...but not the one I thought (and it didn't seem to bump their traffic much either).

And apparently, I've been having my own secret gatherings :-P

Yeah, I spend a lot of time at home both in-world and in RL and I used to wonder about the fabulous traffic figures on my parcel until I realised that *I* was the traffic.

I'm my own special bot.

As others have already noted, you *cannot* generate traffic on land you own yourself. You can stand on your own land 24/7, and if no one else came by, the traffic would still read zero. Only if the land you "own" is actually group land can you generate traffic on your own parcel.

Yep, my land is set to my group. Nevertheless, it is this account or occasionally one of my alts that is generating most of the traffic on my parcel. I guess it's splitting hairs, technically, to say that you cannot generate traffic on your own land. The group caveat clearly demonstrates that you can.

^ Yeah, I'm in a similar situation. I changed the my last block of land to group owned in order to buy out the ad farm in front of the property without the extra tier for 32m (though unfortunately I'm sure this is how most ad farmers make their money). So yes, the property is technically group owned (by a group that I own).
