www.roblox.comA building based world. It's aimed at kids (so it uses gaming rather than sex as its social glue), but it has some nice features, including shadows and - apparantly - LUA scripting. Oh, and every player gets an island for free. On the other hand, the avatars are awful

My oldest is ADDICTED to this thing. He even has some little creations for sale.
(There are 2 in world currencies. Every one gets a few "tickets" for every day they log in, and if people visit their build. If you upgrade to a paid membership you also get a stipend in the second currency "Robux" and you can list your creations for sale.)

Well, they do score some points for having an even worse attitude to reliability than SL: From: Roblox Wiki Yes, Roblox will crash. When working in Roblox Studio, and you are going to ungroup an object, in the 'Explorer' Menu, make sure that the object you're about to ungroup is the only highlighted object. If not, and you ungroup, Roblox Studio will crash. Also, Roblox Studio will crash if you cut Workspace, put Workspace into Lighting, or any other place for that matter, try to ungroup Workspace, or basically anything else that has to do with Workspace. My advice, don't mess with Workspace unless you know what you're doing. Sometimes, the Studio will just crash on its own. It doesn't have anything to do with your computer, so don't worry. Just restart Studio, and try again.
It even has almost exactly the same crash report dialog as SL... It actually seems like quite a neat system - in fact it's almost a shame it's been focused on kids so heavily.

I have a friend who programs in LUA for fun, and he has a precociously hyper-intelligent 7-year old child. They will both LOVE this.

It looks quite fun but apart from the benefit of shadows it doesn't look as sophisticated as SL's visual environment. When we get our dynamic shadows, SL will become a more serious tool for architectural simulation.
