You won't loose anything from within SL, that's all on the SL servers.

You will loose your settings like graphics preferences, and your busy message.

What is SL related, should you format your HD and like to listen/view media in SL, would be to reinstall QuickTime.... also consider install versions 1, 2 and 3 of NetFramework (not always picked up by the standard Windows Updates).

If you keep logs of your chat and IM, those are stored locally on your computer.

Are you moving to another OS?
If so, well done.
Only problem (with Linux at least) No video or voice. Yet! but soon.
(I know video is "ready" now but I can't get it to run. Read: Not ready.)

That really only leaves Windows then; as the only other alternative is to own a Mac, the thought of which makes me laugh.

Linux is fine, but it was pointed out that you can't play streamed media or have voice on linux. So that only leaves Windows as the only realistic alternative.

It would seem that recently a number of Linux users have got media to play in game... but judging by the various posts I've been following, it is no easy task...

There is something in me that wants to take the plunge and load up Linux... it maybe residue from the days when I used to have to write printer codes for the OS so my editing programmes could 'chat' to my printer.... making up PCB's to create 8bit serial connections from a 7bit source... and building Class A amplifiers for my sound system... or when I would spend a great deal of time tinkering with my car(s)...

I suppose I'm getting old, and like to just plug things in and have them work... take my car to be serviced so I can just drive it... maybe the Borg slipped in one night and assimulated me into the Microsoft collective....

What will push me over the edge, to relive those times, will be in the year 2010 when XP is no longer supported, and maybe even then, it may take a few years more, before I get out my trusted 'toolkit' and start tinkering again.... I refuse the likes of Vista, I have seen it coming and its not a good thing.... If Microsoft have their way, all PC's will come with the box welded shut, security seals, coloured dye explosive devices that trigger if you breach the outter shell and donggles will return to all our devices and software.

I may just checkout to see if they have one of those penguin Tee shirts in my size in advance. Well.. assuming they have media working in SL by then
